Motivating Your Children To Be More Active
Being physically active is one of the most important aspects of a child’s health, helping boost their memory, improve their social skills and keep both their mental and physical health in check.
However, in today’s day and age of smartphones, TikTok and, ultimately, a whole variety of other distractions, encouraging your children to keep fit and active can be a lot easier said than done. So, what can you do?
Well, that’s what we’re here to discuss in this article.
Whether it be watching or actively taking part in a sport, join us as we run through some of the best ways to get your children interested in sports, highlighting what you can do to help unglue them from their screens and get their hearts pumping.

Identify their personal interests
Just because you were hugely passionate about football or basketball when you were a child, that doesn’t necessarily mean that same level of passion will translate to your children as well.
And, while that may be hard to take, it’s important to listen to your children and actively encourage any of the hobbies and interests that they themselves are particularly interested in.
Whether it be a team sport like netball, an individual sport like tennis or a more unique activity like archery, taking an interest in what your children do and don’t like will prove incredibly beneficial in the long run. It will also provide kids with the freedom to challenge themselves and teach them that it’s good to try things they’re interested in.
What’s more, it’ll also reassure them that they have your full support, making it more likely that they’ll come to you whenever they have a new hobby or interest they’d like to pursue.
Do sports together
Children often look for self-affirmation from their parents and are constantly on the lookout for new ways to make you as proud of them as possible. So, why not use this to your advantage by sharing your own sports, hobbies and interests with them?
If you are particularly into golf, for instance, inviting your children to join you at the golf course from time to time could be a great way of both introducing them to the sport you love, while also enabling you to pass on your skills and get them into playing golf themselves.
Plus, whichever way you want to look at it, spending time with your children in this way can be an incredibly positive thing to do, offering you both the opportunity to create a number of lasting lifelong memories.
Whether it be teaching them to ride a bike, setting up a basketball hoop in the backyard or simply hitting a tennis ball back and forth to one another, a child’s tendency to associate sports with fun starts with you. With this in mind, it’s important for you to actively invite youngsters to join in; create as many opportunities as possible for them to enjoy a wide variety of athletic activities with you.
Lead by example
When trying to encourage your children to take up and stick to a more active lifestyle, it’s important to lead by example and act like a role model for them to look up to.
If you spend all day lounging around in front of the TV, for instance, they could start to associate this behaviour with normality and eventually feel discouraged to keep active themselves.
Therefore, it’s important for you to maintain as healthy and active a lifestyle as possible, in order to demonstrate the key reasons as to why exercising on a regular basis is such a vital commodity of life.
The last thing you should want, after all, is for your child to emulate your negative behaviour. As such, make sure the lessons you are choosing to teach them – whether consciously or subconsciously – are the actual lessons you want them to learn and remember for life.
As we mentioned at the start of this article, encouraging your children to exercise on a regular basis is imperative to keeping them healthy and ensuring they mature correctly.
Even if playing sports and exercising isn’t really their thing, by utilising the hints and tips listed above, you could make a big difference to their lives, introducing them to new hobbies and interests that they might not have even realised they had.
Whether it’s tennis, golf, football, netball or simply walking the dog, the earlier you can introduce your children to the thrills and benefits of exercising, the better they will fare as they progress into their teens and later on into adulthood.
