7 Membership Types To Help You Become More Active
AD
The goal of becoming more active ranks highly on many people’s priority lists. But when left to our own devices it can be hard to find the motivation and time to move and get the blood pumping around our bodies.
We lead busy and stressful lives so it’s not uncommon to find it difficult to pull on your exercise clothes when all you want to do is sit on the couch in your dressing gown. A lack of engagement and enjoyment is a key contributor to people failing with activity, which further compounds the struggle. It’s important therefore to find something that you like to motivate you.
That is where membership to a fitness centre or activity group is an effective way to keep you interested, motivated and ultimately active. Here is some membership inspiration to help to become more active and meet your fitness goals.
1. The gym
Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way first. Yes, a gym membership is a great way to stay active but many people also find it’s one of those expenses that they don’t get much use out of once the first wave of enthusiasm for working out has gone.
However, if you have trouble with gym commitment, the best way to remain active is to find a gym membership that also includes classes as part of the monthly fee.
Gym classes are a more fun and enjoyable way to work out while also providing you with variety and accountability. Personal training can be expensive but classes are often led by these trainers and are a more cost-effective way to use a gym membership and maintain a high level of activity.
2. Swimming pool
Swimming is a great form of exercise and it allows you to strengthen muscles in your body that you wouldn’t commonly use. Also, as you are in the water it is a form of low-impact exercise which takes the pressure off your joints and limbs.
This more gentle form of exercise will not see you aching for days like you might with a gym workout but you still build muscle and burn calories – a win-win in our book. Consider a membership that allows you access to more than one swimming pool, to ensure that even when you are on holiday or travelling for work you can still get some lengths in.
3. Sports clubs
Sports clubs allow you to find activities that you are passionate about, from the intensity of team sports like football, netball and basketball, to individual sports such as paddleboarding, climbing or badminton. They are a great way to keep you interested in staying active because becoming part of a club opens up a social element that other workouts lack.
This could be meeting with your fellow clubmates for a coffee after your game or activity has finished, or the accountability that comes with doing activities in a team environment. Enjoying activities through a sports club helps to awaken your competitive spirit, which pushes you to new levels that you may otherwise not reach when exercising alone.

4. Health clubs and spas
Who said being active meant you couldn’t also treat yourself? A membership to a health club and spa can be a great way to help you become more active because it’s more than just going somewhere to exercise.
You have access to a variety of activities like tennis and Pilates whilst being able to enjoy a post-workout massage or a relaxing spa treatment to help speed up your recovery. With food and drink also available, health clubs and spas are a great way to indulge your luxurious tendencies while also getting solid workouts and exercise.
5. Yoga and Pilates
Intense workouts aren’t for everyone and while they get your heart racing, there is value in activities that are practised at a slower pace. Yoga and Pilates memberships allow you to fit in these activities around your schedule with multiple classes commonly available on any given day.
This works better for some people than trying to rush for a yoga or Pilates booking at your gym which may only occur once or twice per week. The great thing about yoga and Pilates is that you can enjoy them many times per week as they are low-impact and don’t require intense aerobic exertion.
In addition to the physical benefits that a yoga or Pilates membership brings, you are also taking the time to look after your mental health. Pilates and yoga are great ways to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and lower your heart rate.
6. Online fitness
If recent years have taught us anything it’s that there are plenty of ways we can use our homes to improve our lives. From finding space for a home office, to workouts in front of the TV, compared to just a few years ago we are now much more open to the idea of using our homes for multiple activities.
Online fitness memberships and classes are a great way to get more activity and exercise in your life without having to find a physical location to travel to. Given how busy most of us are, an online fitness membership fits around your schedule and some are even tailored to you.
Through video chat or streaming classes from your phone, there is a lot of flexibility with online fitness. With a choice of activity types, from general aerobic workouts to HIIT sessions, Pilates, dance and weights, you can enjoy a total body workout with an online fitness subscription.
7. Nutrition coaching
Most fitness experts would agree that exercise is only one aspect of a healthy lifestyle and that nutrition and diet are also significant.
Nutrition subscriptions allow you to sign up with a qualified nutritionist who creates a meal plan programme that suits your lifestyle and preferences, offering regular check-ins to help keep you accountable. This helps to teach you the fundamentals of nutrition on a basic level and also how to adapt your food and calorie intake depending on how active you are.
Memberships can make you more active
By adding a social element, a level of accountability and more variety, fitness and health-focused memberships are a great way to help you become more active. Whether you have a particular fitness goal in mind or you just wish to increase your overall activity level, consider becoming a member of a club, class or activity to reap the rewards and avoid becoming demotivated.

Very sensible advice. I do Aquarobics two or three times a week. Not only is it great exercise but a social occasion, I have made lovely friends over the 8 years I have been doing it. I also do a sit down exercise routine on line, and if it is too wet or cold for a walk I feel I am least doing some exercise.
