Top Tip to Make Your Home Cosy and Warm This Winter
I’m sure it’s not just me that has suddenly felt the temperature drop. We’ve seen snow and lots of wind this weekend thanks to storm Arwen. Even ‘I’m a Celeb’ was cancelled due to the storm battering the local area! With that being said, now is the perfect time to start preparing for the colder weather by grabbing a box set, or a good read, while thinking warm thoughts and snuggling down.
With the cold weather blowing our way, here are my top tips on how to make your home cosy and warm this winter.
Make sure your home isn’t letting in the cold this winter
This year we have had new doors and windows put into our bungalow, and while they have taken some getting used to, it has definitely made a welcome difference when it comes to the cold (and rain) entering our home.
Of course, upgrading your windows and doors will make your home cosier and more energy-efficient, but these aren’t the only benefits. Composite doors and new windows offer more security for the home as well, which will give you and your family more peace of mind, especially with Christmas just around the corner.
If you are thinking of upgrading your doors and/or windows then heading to your local showroom is a good idea. This will help you see the benefits of these home improvements up close and in person, as well as giving you a first-hand look at the variety of styles and colours available for your home.
Set your heating
It can be so simple to reach for the heating dial and turn it on, especially when it is linked to your phone. However, this isn’t always the best idea. Running your heating on a timer and using thermostatic radiator valves can make your heating work better for you. This allows you to heat the house only when it is needed and control the temperature of each room individually. After all, it is recommended that bedrooms should be a little bit cooler than other rooms, while bathrooms should be a bit warmer.
So why not just run the heating 24-7? Well, with energy prices going up this could see a huge addition to your bills and make your home too warm when you aren’t even there. Of course, if you have pets don’t let the temperature dip too much!
If you end up being around when you didn’t expect it and your home feels a bit cold, don’t panic. If possible, try and layer up. Grab yourself a jumper instead of just wearing a t-shirt, put on some fluffy socks, or cuddle up under a cosy blanket. You’ll feel warmer before you know it!
Of course, don’t let yourself get a chill, but sometimes adding an extra layer or getting moving can warm you right up without you unnecessarily spending money on your heating bills..
Other ways to keep your home warm this winter
There are, of course, a number of simple adaptations you can make around your home to try and keep it just that bit warmer. For instance, thicker curtains up at the window will help keep the warmth in, Whilst draft excluders against the bottom of doors will keep the cold out. If you are finding drafts are blowing in from other areas, you could also look at ways to cover these. For instance, we have a draft that blows in from an old fireplace, so we have been looking into chimney balloons as the chimney is unused.
It is also worth making sure you aren’t blocking any radiators, as having something in front of them can really hinder the flow of heat. You could even think about adding some radiator foils which can help to bounce heat back into the room.
Of course, these are just a few ideas about helping keep your home warm this winter. There are many other ideas out there for blocking drafts and making sure your home is holding in heat, like checking your home is insulated.

Definitely, I think sometimes we get stuck thinking of the same things over and over.
If you have a loft that you access via a drop-down ladder and trapdoor, make sure you keepthe trapdoor firmly shut. Warm air rises and if you don’t, all your lovely hot air will rush out through the loft and roof. Conversely, in the summer, keep the trapdoor wide open. It will help keep the ground floor of your home nice and cool.
Oh that is a good thing to remember – it is incredible how much warmth can be lost in such a way!

These are all wonderful tips. One of my favorites is to bake goodies because the oven can keep the house warm too. This always helps us, plus we love to bake as a family.
That is so true – it is amazing the difference just having something on in the oven can make to a room isn’t it?
I am using an app to control my heaters via smart plugs. I don’t keep the heating on all the time as that would end up costing an arm and a leg. With the app I can turn it on half an hour before I come home, and also I can set it on a timer. This method saved me so much money last year.
That is such a good idea, we have HIVE heating and it really does make a difference I’ve found I have to admit.

We will be adding more insulation into the attic to help with this. My husband already put in some more plywood to have storage room.

I need to get my husband to reset the heating. I’ve been freezing after the school run and it’s not been fun. it takes a while for it to kick in and heat up. I’ve started not opening curtains to keep in heat which makes a difference.

I always have our heat set to 72! I’ll keep your other tips in mind. I’m in Texas so it doesn’t get too cold, but last year we got snow which is rare for here. So it was a bit chaotic.
