How to Turn an Ordinary Evening Into a Home Spa Night
I love the idea of a spa day, but sometimes even the thought of getting everything ready for one sounds exhausting.
With chronic illness and limited energy, I’m definitely not going to spend hours preparing for an evening that’s supposed to help me relax.
Thankfully, a home spa night doesn’t need to involve a bath, loads of products or doing everything at once. Sometimes it’s just about making an ordinary evening feel a little nicer.
Get Things Ready at Your Own Pace
If getting everything ready is going to use up all your energy, spread it out.
You could make yourself a little spa basket over a few days, adding things as and when you have the energy. Pop in your moisturiser, face mask, hair treatment and anything else you might fancy using.
And if you have someone who can help gather things for you, ask them.
Your Shower Doesn’t Have to Be an Everything Shower

I can’t use a bath because of my health, so for me it has to be a shower.
That doesn’t mean it can’t be part of a home spa night.
I use a shower stool, which makes a huge difference to the amount of energy showering takes. I’ve also learnt that, as tempting as really hot water can be, slightly cooler water works much better for me.
I also use a washing-up bowl to pop my feet in; sometimes I’ll even use part of a bath bomb as well – because why not!
You also don’t have to do everything at once.
Washing your hair and washing your body can happen at different times. You don’t have to add a body scrub, shave, wash your hair and do everything else just because you’ve decided it’s a pamper night.
Take it at a pace you can do.
Pick Whatever You Fancy

I quite like a face mask, although some of the textures just aren’t for me, yes – I’m very picky.
A body scrub is something I don’t use all the time because it takes extra energy, so that can feel like a bit of a treat. I also like a nice hair mask.
I wouldn’t try to do all of them in one night, though. I’d just pick whatever I fancied and had the energy for.
If energy was really low, I’d go for moisturiser. My body always feels better after I’ve moisturised.
Get Comfortable Afterwards

Once I’m finished, I’ll pop on some comfy PJs, or if it’s cooler, add a dressing gown and fluffy socks.
Then it’s time for tea, because obviously.
I wouldn’t light a candle in the bathroom, but afterwards I might put on a spa-scented candle in the lounge and listen to an audiobook or some music.
It doesn’t have to be traditional spa music either. Some meditation music sends me a bit funny, so I’d much rather listen to something I actually enjoy.
Personally, I am not particularly bothered about having snacks as part of a spa night, although apples always make me think of spas for some reason.
I have no idea why. (OK, maybe it’s because at some spas they used to like to put them out in little bowls around the place).
What If You Have Very Little Energy?
Then make it really simple.
You don’t even need to shower if that’s too much. Wash your face, put on some moisturiser, change into your PJs and get comfortable.
After the hot weather we’ve had this summer, there have been times when I’ve got out of the shower and immediately started sweating again and thought, was there even any point?
So sometimes just being clean, moisturised, in my PJs and sitting down with a cup of tea is enough.
A home spa night doesn’t need to be a whole event. Just pick the bits you enjoy, forget the ones you don’t and work with the energy you’ve got.
What would you include in your perfect home spa night?
