Fearless by Gemma Roe: Finding Hope When the World Feels Overwhelming
There are times when it feels like the world is just too much.
In fact, I’ve reached the point where I’ve removed news apps from my phone and blocked news websites from appearing on my Facebook feed. Not because I think being completely ignorant about what is happening is a good thing, but because constantly reading about everything going on was having a real impact on my mental health.
Sometimes, you have to protect yourself.
But that can leave you in a difficult position. How do you continue to care about what is happening without feeling as though you need to carry the weight of everything?
That is something Fearless: Finding Courage in a World of Chaos by Gemma Roe explores.
Fearless: Finding Courage in a World of Chaos

Fearless is for those who feel frightened or overwhelmed by the direction the world is heading in, but haven’t completely lost hope that things could be different.
Gemma looks at some incredibly difficult subjects, including conflict, injustice, inequality and ecological uncertainty, alongside the emotional impact that witnessing these things can have.
However, this isn’t simply a book about everything that is wrong with the world. It asks how we hold onto compassion, find moments of joy and continue to care when everything can feel completely overwhelming.
And I think that’s an incredibly difficult balance to find.
When Caring Becomes Overwhelming
Personally, I really struggle with knowing awful things are happening while trying to get on with everyday life. I try to switch off and live in the moment where possible, but that’s easier said than done.
I’ve also wondered whether I should be doing more.
Recently, that was part of the reason I decided to write about the use of the term “sickfluencer” and the changing narrative around disabled people. I can’t speak knowledgeably about every issue happening in the world, but disability and the way disabled people are spoken about is something I can speak about.
Perhaps that’s part of finding a way through the overwhelm.
We don’t all need to take everything on, but I don’t think we should ignore everything either.
Making a difference is also going to look different for everyone. It might be speaking out about something you understand, sharing information about an issue affecting someone you know, supporting a cause or simply helping another person.
Sometimes you also need to step away. Trying to carry every bad thing happening in the world isn’t going to help anyone.
Can Ordinary People Make a Difference?
One of the ideas explored in Fearless is the power ordinary people have to create change rather than simply waiting for governments and institutions.
I’ll admit I’m conflicted about this.
I often feel as though we have very little say in what happens. I’d like to think ordinary people can make a difference, but in reality, I’m not always sure.
Fearless doesn’t promise easy answers. Instead, it combines philosophical reflection with practical ideas for navigating grief, uncertainty and difficult moral questions, while exploring resilience, purpose, compassion and hope.
Who Is Gemma Roe?
Gemma Roe, also known online as Mrs Roundhouse, is an environmentalist, designer, coach and writer. Her work explores the balance between hope and despair in a world facing conflict, inequality and environmental challenges.
Her advocacy has included a particular focus on Palestine, and Fearless draws partly on her own journey from entrepreneur to human rights advocate.
There’s also a little local connection for me, as Gemma lives here in Staffordshire with her family, two cats and Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Poppy.
And yes, animals are actually one of the things I turn to when humanity is all getting a bit much.
Sometimes you can think deeply about the state of the world. Sometimes you need to watch a ridiculous number of cute animal videos.
I think there needs to be room for both.
