The Importance of Regular Eye Tests
If you’ve never been for an eye test before, it might be time to get one booked. Despite having good eyesight being one of the greatest natural gifts we enjoy, most of us tend to take it for granted – a fact demonstrated by a recent survey from Guide Dogs UK that revealed around five million Brits have never had an eye test, with tens of millions more having not been in the last three years.
It’s recommended that we all have our eyes checked once every two years. But as you sit here reading this article seemingly with no trouble whatsoever, you might be wondering why you need to.
Here are three reasons to start getting your eyes examined on a regular basis.
Get ahead of a number of potential health issues
Something you might not know about eye tests is they can do plenty more for your health than just seeing how your eyes are doing. While the primary concern of an eye test is to detect common eye conditions and any changes in vision, it can also identify more serious underlying health issues including high blood pressure, diabetes and eye cancers.
This is because your optometrist can detect key indicators of those conditions when they take a look at you with their ophthalmoscope or Volk Lens. The Volk Lens allows changes in the fine blood vessels within the eyes to be seen, which could just catch something you had no idea about.

Understand whether you need to take action and prevent any further damage
One of the biggest issues most of us have in spotting eye issues is that we simply can’t see them. That’s no cheap pun, either – you usually won’t notice what you’re missing if your eyes are slowly deteriorating. We tend to adapt to such issues without noticing – for example, you might be holding your phone closer to your face without realising to see it properly.
These things needn’t be an issue. With a quick eye test, you can find out whether any sight issues are present and take action. You might just need to invest in some contact lenses to make your life easier. Likewise, you might find you have an issue that could get worse but can be stopped with a little help. Either way, it makes a quick eye test more than worth it.
Get the reassurance and support you need
As we established at the start of the article, most of us take our rather amazing eyesight for granted. If you are worried about it, though (as more of us maybe should be), getting an eye test can offer the reassurance you need that all is well with two of the most important possessions you’ve got.
Eye tests are quick, easy to book and will tell everything you need to know about your vision. Don’t let a simple trip down to your local optometrist get in the way of seeing life as you should!
