Taking Care of Wounds at Home with Elastoplast

I have always been pretty accident-prone. From tripping over a drain at age 6 or 7 and cutting my knee wide open, to falling down two steps and breaking my ankle in secondary school.
While I’ve grown older and I’m perhaps not quite so reckless (you aren’t going to find me up a tree anymore), my ability to take a tumble hasn’t changed. In fact, it has probably gotten worse considering I’m not so steady on my feet anymore.
For many reasons I’ve always had how important wound care is drilled into me. After all, infections are more common than you may think, with 50% of acute wounds suffering from one.
Today I have teamed up with the healing experts, Elastoplast, to talk about how to care for wounds at home using their Antibacterial Dressings and other wound care products.

The Use of Silver in Dressings.
Silver has been used in healing since Hippocrates’s time. But why?
It has been found that silver ions (or charged atoms as they are sometimes known) react with many bacterial cells. This means when used within wound care items, such as dressings, it can help to stop the creation of bonds within bacteria, meaning bacterial cell growth is interrupted, which in turn can help stop the start and / or spread of infection.
It has also been found that the use of silver in dressings can help increase the rate of healing, when compared to wounds which aren’t covered with a dressing containing silver, as it allows the surface tissue to be restored, while reducing inflammation.
How to Care for your Wound at Home.
If you have a wound which needs caring for at home, here are a few simple tips to try and look after it.
Of course, you are going to want to start by making sure you have clean hands, and anything you will touch the wound with is sterile. Check product use-by dates and throw away anything that is open and shouldn’t be, don’t risk using it if you’re not sure how long it has been open for.
If the wound is bleeding gently apply pressure using a sterile cloth or gauze. Raising the limb or area of the cut can also help to stem the bleeding.
Next, you want to cleanse the wound. If there is any debris in the wound, carefully remove it with sanitised tweezers, before cleansing the area. Elastoplast Wound Spray is perfect for this step as it is simple to use, pain-free and helps to prevent wound infections.
Once the wound is clean, it’s then time to protect by covering it with an Elastoplast Antibacterial Dressing. These harness the power of silver ions. They are flexible yet firm, meaning you should be able to carry on your day to day life without worry. They also offer a waterproof version which can be used when washing, bathing, showering or even swimming.
Lastly, once the wound is closed and starting its healing journey, to further create an optimal healing conditions, you could look to use the Elastoplast Wound Healing Ointment. This helps form a barrier around the wound which creates a protective layer while also offering a moist healing environment. What’s more, it is even known to help reduce scarring. However, always make sure the wound is fully closed first.

I was not aware of these, thank you for sharing! My daughter and I are terribly accident prone and my husband often comes home from work with some pretty big wounds (appliance repair). I would love to have something on hand at home to help fix him up, definitely looking more into these!

They are great plasters and it is wonderful they help your wound heal not just cover it.
Very interesting. I have never used this type of product. We just use basic bandaids. These sound like a great product around in case of wounds, especially with having two little boys.
They are really good and don’t cost much either, very reasonably priced.
I am so clumsy as well, especially in the kitchen, when I’m chopping vegetables. I cut my fingers at least once a month. I definitely need a couple of boxes of Elastoplant in my house.
I’m not allowed to chop veggies anymore as I’m just like that, I can never not hurt myself. It’s like I forget things are dangerous.

We always have some Elastoplast in the medicine cupboard at home, they’re just such good quality plasters and so affordable too.

We have loads of Elastoplast plasters. It helps to have a range just in case as I’ve 3 little ones and you never know how many plasters you’ll need in a week.
Definitely, there is nothing like making sure you have a range of first aid items around – I think we all need that.

Wow this product is amazing. I always bought cheaper ones. They just serves as a cover unlike this one gives antibacterial to it. From now on I’ll be choosing this one as my wound plaster.
They are really good – my Mum always used Elastoplast on me as a kid so it was just habit I guess to keep buying them.

They are the waterproof ones as well 🙂 so great for if you are bathing or going swimming.
I always use these! I have loads of these in the house because my husband and I are prone to accidents. Plus they don’t cost an arm and a leg for basic wound protection.
Exactly while they are premium products they actually don’t cost as much as you think they might which is such a plus.

I love Elastoplast plasters as I find they are of good make and last a lot better then some other brands. As a mum of two, I always have these in my handbag or when we go travelling. It is also great that they are waterproof as well

These sound like great bandages. My friend has an ointment with silver in it and she says it is amazing. It is only available by prescription, so I’ll have to tell her about these.

I remember always having plasters on my knee as a child from being adventurous! Now I always have plasters in our first aid kit. I haven’t tried the wound spray before though so I’ll check it out!
My Dad was saying he wants some wound spray for his fishing kit now as it means if he hurts himself he has something he can still use.
I need these in the house. I have a daughter who is constantly getting hurt. She’s clumsy like her mother and is a bit of a daredevil.

This is actually really useful to know. I often struggle with very nasty bites that often get infected and I bet a plaster like this could really help.

From a fellow chronic clumsy, great advice! I’ve tried cheaper plasters but they’re just not as good as Elastoplast. It’s one of the few things that’s actually worth going for the brand name. The wound spray is great too – ideal for cleaning up the aftermath of a thumb/paring knife battle when a plaster isn’t always going to stick on a much-used thumb!
They really are the best, aren’t they? I’ve bought fun ones before and just cheap ones but they just don’t stay or cover to well and of course don’t have additions such as silver. I definitely need to get some of the wound spray in.
