  3. My top tip is to not start reading a new book right before bed. I can never put it down and then end up staying up half the night.

So, going to bed at the same time each night, half an hour before bedtime switching off the tv/computer/radio and not reading (all stimulate the brain) and following the same routine (brushing teeth, putting the cat out or whatever). It all signals to your brain (and body) that it is time to rest, although it can take a while to work if you haven’t had a good routine before so don’t expect it to work immediately you make the changes!

  32. The most likely thing that works is reading something like a magazine that has enough text to make me sleepy. But not a book that is so good you can’t put down!!! I’ve been camping in my extra room over a year on a bunch of pillows, and would love another, as the 86-yr-old woman under me bashes the wall if I even sit on my bed to put on my pj’s. She’s made complaints about it, although she just says “noise,” they wouldn’t believe she can’t stand me getting into my bed or out of it. So I haven’t slept in my bed (or even sat on it). I have to make sure something helps me sleep beyond all the lumps and bumps of my makeshift bed on the floor. This pillow looks soo dreamy!

  33. Nomally a warm shower and then I read a bool in bed until I feel sleepy. That normally does the job.

  34. I believe in setting a good nighttime routine. Each night I have a bath then read my book for an hour and settle down for my nights sleep at 11.30pm.

  46. I don’t have any difficulty in sleeping but I have a very active job which wears me out, both physically and mentally. On days when I’m not so active, I do notice that it can take longer to drop off

    1. I do this too, most nights, except for in freezing weather as it affects my asthma. Fresh air definitely aids sleep, I think.

  48. I’ve been practicing meditation before bed and I’ve found that really helps quiet my brain and allows me to get to sleep. I would certainly recommend it. There are so many apps and YouTube videos etc to help now.

  50. Hello, my tips for a good sleep is to have black out blinds in your bedroom to make it as dark as possible for sleep.

  51. I also live with chronic pain and I agree that sometimes the very thing you most want to do – lie down – can also be the most uncomfortable, even painful. My tip would be rest either a hot water bottle or a cool pack, whichever suits, on or under the bit that hurts the most. Try to relax and allow yourself to be distracted from your pain or discomfort – by a book some music on the radio for example. A great prize, fingers crossed, thank you.

  63. Everybody is different but what works for me is to do a Sudoku or cryptic crossword when I first go to bed then read on my Kindle until I feel tired. This varies between 5 minutes and a couple of hours but its a great way to clear the debris of the day from my thoughts

  82. Listen to the book at bedtime, 10,45pm Radio 4, it only last 15mins, but it’s long enough to snuggle down and feel sleepy when you turn the radio off a 11pm you will soon be fast asleep.

  85. I find using a humidifier very helpful. The water keeps the air moist and stops those tickly coughs you often get if you suffer from allergies. With many you can also add a few drops of essential oils such as lavender, which is known to aid restful sleep.
