Quick and Easy Snacks to make your Bonfire Party go off with a Bang
Remember, remember the 5th of November, gunpowder, treason and… lots of delicious food to warm you up after being out in the cold watching fireworks. Okay, so it doesn’t have quite the same ring to it as the famous poem, but having some tasty treats to serve on bonfire night is sure to make your party rhyme.
From spicy foods that bring some colour back to your cheeks, to seasonal snacks and warming drinks, here are some fresh ideas for bonfire night treats. All are easy to prepare or can be left cooking while you get on with entertaining your guests.
Something pumpkin
While it may not be the best idea to cook up the pumpkin you carved before Halloween, if you can get your hands on a fresh one, turn it into a soup and people can take a mug outside with them as they ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ over the pyrotechnics. Add some spices like cumin and coriander for flavour and your fragrant pumpkin soup can bubble away until ready.
Hot and steamy
As an alternative to take al fresco, sweet toothed party-goers will love a mug of hot chocolate. Not just for kids, you can spruce it up in all sorts of ways, including by adding a tot of your favourite tipple or a shot of coffee to perk everyone up. If you’ve got time, try this Bonfire Hot Chocolate, where the classic choc-orange combo is pepped up with some chilli.
Leave-in-the-oven pork
Get ahead and stick a joint of pork in the oven early so you can leave it slow-roasting and growing in flavour while you get on with other things. This recipe for Slow Roast Pork Shoulder can be prepped with spices, cider vinegar and treacle in just 20 minutes before being left in the oven or slow cooker all day. It’ll fill the house with a delicious aroma, too.
Very-peri tasty
What better to go with fall-apart pork than some spicy fries? Also great served on their own as a tasty snack, these no hassle McCain Peri Peri Fries are ready prepared for you, so all you have to do it put them in the oven or grill just ahead of when you want them. With a flavouring of paprika and cayenne pepper, they’re an easy way to warm the cockles in no time.
Not just sausages on sticks
It’s not bonfire night without bangers – and by that we mean the sausage variety. Create the ultimate in safe indoor fireworks with skewered sausages that look just like rockets. Cook up some sausages – any flavour you like – then spike them on wooden or metal skewers and top with a triangle of pepper, each in a different colour. You could even go retro and display them spiked into a foil covered vegetable so they stand up like fireworks stuck in the ground. A halved cabbage works best for this as it’s the right size and soft enough to skewer.
Most of all though, have an amazing Bonfire Night and stay safe.
