Are your Pets Holiday Ready
Sally loves going on holiday, it is perhaps one of her favourite times of the year. She takes on a completely different demeanour in the car, taking up as much room as possible and making sure she is as comfortable as can be for the long ride ahead.
Of course, everyone does things differently when they have a pet and it comes to heading off on the yearly breakaway. There are those that have pet passports at the ready, allowing people and their much-loved pets to take off to foreign shores. While others, such as myself, Ash and Sally decide to explore many of the pet-friendly locations across the UK.
However, taking your pet away with you isn’t always possible and so many decide to leave their precious pet at home, leaving them in the capable hands of those who are trained to look after pets. For instance, there is a great selection of kennels in Birmingham and across the country, which can be easily searched for. That I could look into if the need arose to take some time away without Sally.
No matter what your pet is doing while you are taking a break away, there are a number of things you must do. Such as making sure their vaccinations are up to date, as well as making sure your pets have some home comforts around them such as blankets and toys.

I had cats but always had to leave them in a cattery when we went away. Although, on one occasion we did have a friend come over daily and that worked as they were in their own space. I am pining for a puppy and one of the reasons is to be able to take it with us whenever we go away (which is quite often) as opposed to feeling the pain I felt when leaving my beloved cat at home. x
These are all great tips to make sure your pets are holiday ready, Sarah. We don’t have any fur babies at the mo, but I’m usually so stressed the night before travelling I’d probably end up with some sort of ‘Homeward Bound’ scenario on my hands, and I’d end up losing them! Haha

I didnt know pets need a passport. I also didnt realize it was a thing to take your pets on holiday I just seen some people with their dogs here in Bocas interesting.
You just reminded me that I need to do the annual vaccine for my cat soon.
My dog shows signs of anxiety if we leave him in a kennel or doggy day care. If we have to go someplace, we leave him with my sister. My niece has dogs too, so I don’t worry one bit because my dog gets to meet up with his “friends.”

We did both with our family dog growing up. Sometimes we’d go abroad and he’d go into kennels and sometimes we’d go somewhere in the UK with him x
I don’t have any pets but my brother and his family do, they normally leave the dogs with other family members or take them to the kennel where possible
i never knew a pet passport exists. my friend puts his cats up in a cattery and pays a bit extra for a nice cattery
I do not like it one bit if I had to leave my dog in a kennel when we head on out for a vacation. If we could find a pet friendly hotel, then we take him. If not, then I leave him with my sister, or with someone he knows and we can trust.
it’s hard to take care of pets, that’s why we decided to get just one and it’s a hedgehog. He’s a low maintenance pet which is perfect for our lifestyle. Nice tips by the way.

As I work in a veterinary practice it is much easier for me to keep on top of vaccinations, flea and tick, and worm treatment for my dog. He is ready for anything, even holidays.

Just come back from a UK holiday we always go self catering in cottages or chalets that take pets-as its her holiday too . The dogs bag was bigger than mine ! full of bowls , bedding , doggy first aid kit ,towel , coat and food!!

I wish I had pets but this will be so handy for when I do get my dream pug, French Bulldog and Persian cat. Its important to get them travel ready x

This is such a great checklist for anyone taking their pet away. We never normally take our pets with us and instead opt for someone to look after them at home while we are away x
If you can get someone in to look after them at home I think that is a fantastic thing to do 🙂
Those are all great tips. We don’t travel much as a whole family so it’s very rare that our animals have anyone other than us take care of them.
I spoil my pets. They are ready for anything. Usually…Lol
When we had a cat we put her in kennels twice, then first time they put her in a pen away from all the other cats and near a duck pond and we swear she was trying to quack for a couple of weeks when we got her home. the next time she went in a posh cattery but we don’t think she liked or appreicated it but when we dropped her off they asked if we wanted to be able to see her on cctv while we were away (we didn’t have wifi were we were going so we said no) then they asked how much spending money we were leaving her!! Errr none she’s a cat. we had to take all her own food and bedding so we think she heard us not leaving money for extra treats and acted up. They delivered her home and she pee’d all over their van. After that we didn’t think they’d have her back so we staggered our holidays so someone was always at home with her.
This is such a helpful list! I have two dogs and in the past we have not considered and planned better for what they needed when we are going out of town. Luckily we figured it all out!
We don’t go on holidays because we have so many pets! If we did I think I’d have to get someone to stay at my place with them…. Theres just so many!

Great advice. My brother used to look after my little cat when I went on holidays but my poor kitty died a few weeks ago. I’m heart broken 🙁

We took our dogs to the vets last week for their shots and the kennel shot that they need before we take them to the kennel. Our dogs are holiday ready.

I’m not a pet owner but my cousin is. We do a lot of girl trips and her dog goes to a doggy daycare. The owner sends her a daily report and pictures. I think it is so cute.
Oh how cool, I’ve heard of Doggie Daycare but I don’t think it’s such a thing over here which I think is a real shame.

I don’t have pets, but when I have a house I know I want cats as opposed to dogs. So for me I’d probably just get someone round to feed the cats as opposed to taking them somewhere x
Top tips Sarah as ever…we are going away for four days with our pooch next week – staying in a wood lodge on one of those ‘Sun’ cheap hols, so he should enjoy the freedom of being surrounded by nature for a few days. Have to very careful of ticks etc though. x
I have a Labrador, her name is OREO. She is always excited to go outside. If we are planning to go outside, she can sense that, and she starts roaming around us so that while going we won’t leave her. And she is really well to handle. When she sits in the car she behaves like a gentleman. We almost take her everywhere, but in case if we are not able to we leave her at my aunt’s home.

Such a great checklist of things to think about when you’re going to be gone. If we’re able, we always bring the dogs along with us and ask a neighbor to check in on the cats. If we do have to board the dogs, it’s at the same place they go every afternoon for daycare, so it’s almost like a home away from home. x
The one thing that gets our pets on edge during the holidays is the noise level. With all the people talking, the music, etc. It really makes them anxious.
Super important details to know! My cat never travels with us (sob) but my dog does. And we have to make sure we’re ready.

We are so lucky that our next door neighbor watches our dog when we go away and we watch their dog when they go away. They are both golden retrievers so we each know what to expect.

I hate to leave my dogs for any extended period. We had a bad experience at a kennel recently so I always opt for the pet friendly hotel where we can take them with us.
Oh no that is such a shame 🙁 I have to admit I’ve only left Sal in a kennel when it was the only option.

Thanks for this. Few years back, we had a dog that gets really anxious during the holiday season. We usually have bunch of people around in our house. So she’s always kinda anxious with lots of people around.
We have four cats, so actually getting away is quite an achievement. We mostly have to rely on family or friends to come over to ours to feed and check on them. I’m not keen on them being left for any length on time, so this can be quite an ask for anyone. Have used a cattery in the past when we were a one cat family, and they were lovely.
Watched something on the TV about taking pets abroad, and it was rather worrying. Not sure I would want to put my pets through any of that.
Our poor dog gets holiday ready by hiding in our room when the fireworks go off. It’s so sad, but we can’t do anything to make him feel better.

Our pets are totally ready. We’re having a get together at our house, so we don’t have to board our pooches, and they don’t even mind fireworks.

This is so important to keep in mind. We have two cats. And a hamster. Luckily we live by family so when we go somewhere, they can come in and check on the animals. But in the past when we didn’t live by family, the cats had to go into a kennel, which they weren’t thrilled with.
My neighbour pops in to check on Dobby and Sock it is great having people around who are willing to do that.
This is a very handy checklist. We take our dogs to the kennel when we go on vacation. Our boarder lady is so awesome, I think our dogs have more fun with her than at our house!

One of my dogs used to go everywhere with me. If he didn’t come, he would stay with my mom.
That’s what we do with Sal most of the time, she either comes with or goes to my parents.
Our dog is super anxious so we already have anxiety pills for her. The Fourth of July is going to be horrible for her so we are going to give her something to keep her calm. You definitely need to prepare your pet because a lot of pets right away when it’s loud.

Having a pet needs a lot of considerations. It’s like raising a baby and you wouldn’t want to leave ur baby behind when you go out to travel.
It really does, there is so many things you need think about before you take them on and they are a long term commitment as well.
This is a really great checklist. I don’t have any pets, but my sister usually hires a dog sitter to stay with her dog.
That’s a nice thing to do as they are then at least at home aren’t they.
