Our Guide To Changing Your Career In 2025
In the world we live in today, it’s never been easier to change your career. With technological developments, more jobs have become readily available, alongside the traditional jobs which were available in the past. And a lot of jobs can be done in the comfort of your own home, such as being a blogger or a copywriter – this is perfect if you have children or want to travel less!
With the right qualifications or training, you can now become a virtual medical receptionist, a personal trainer, a music teacher, a YouTuber, and more. However, to change your career, there are a few things that you may need to do first.
There are different routes you can take in order to change your career. Some people go down the route of volunteering in their spare time, as this gives them real-life experience. Others go down the route of retraining and signing up for online courses. If the new career that you are interested in requires a high level of qualifications (such as a doctor or a nurse), you could sign up for an open university course – this way you can study in your spare time and not have to give up work.
If you are looking to change your career in 2025, know it’s very possible. Here’s our guide to changing your career.

Volunteering
A very useful way to change your career is to volunteer in the new profession that you are interested in. As long as the new profession doesn’t require certain qualifications, volunteering often has a high success rate. The reasons it’s so high are that when volunteering, you get hands-on experience in the role that you will acquire in the long run. By volunteering and doing a good job, you know that the company is likely going to turn to you to employ if a position opens, instead of looking elsewhere.
It’s worth noting that when volunteering, the hands-on experience will give you a real-life example of how the job is and what it entails. It may be that you don’t enjoy it and that it’s a lot different to what you expected. By volunteering, you can simply stop and try a different field, instead of training, dedicating a lot of hours to then discover you don’t like it.
Online training courses
Another way to change your career is to do online courses and learn a new field. Never before has it been as easy as it is to learn something new and then use these skills to work in a different field. In today’s world, you can pick up a laptop and study in the comfort of your own home.
You can learn to be an accountant and do your AAT online, you could study a marketing course and change your career to be a marketing expert or sign up for a graphic design course and become a designer.
The best thing about an online course is that they tend to be affordable, and there is no time frame to complete the course – this means you can change your career over the space of a few months, half a year or longer.
Sign up for an open university course
Some careers require specific qualifications that are high-level. To gain these qualifications and then change careers, you may need to get a degree or do a masters in the chosen field. Instead of giving up your job to go back into full-time education (which more often than not is not an option), you could go down the route of an open university course.
By doing an open university course, you can study in your spare time and complete the degree over a number of years. Whilst studying and going through the degree, new jobs in the field you’re interested in may open up, which you can work in and work your way up as you finish your new degree.
Open University isn’t free and can cost a lot, which is why it’s important you are sure about the new career change before signing up for a course and studying for a few years. If you don’t have the money to do a degree, grants are available. Or you could save up and then sign up for a course.

Find a career where your skills are transferable
If you’ve been working for a long time, then you’ll have learnt a lot of things and developed core skills which you will take with you to the next place you work. Instead of volunteering or signing up for online courses, you could try and find a career that requires similar skills to the ones you already have. For example, if you are a teacher and have a passion for fitness, then a natural career change could be becoming a personal trainer.
The same could be said if you are a marketing expert but want to get into design. Combining transferable skills with online courses can be a powerful way to make yourself look highly skilled and desirable to potential employers in the new career you are interested in.
We hope we have given you some useful pointers on ways to change your career this year. As you can imagine, different routes apply to different jobs, so you may need to try a few different methods before you can completely change your career and work full-time in a different industry.
The best advice we can give is to be consistent and not give up. When changing careers, you’ll come up against a few challenges, but with the right mindset, you will be able to overcome them. But be prepared to take a pay cut when you change over initially, as you may not be as skilled as you are in your current role.
