How to Be Less Wasteful at Work
It’s crucial for organisations and the individuals that work for them to be more mindful of how they are treating the environment.
We are all too wasteful at times, particularly at work when we’re not the ones paying the bills.
However, there are lots of simple things we can do to become more economical at work, to contribute to saving energy, supplies, money and the environment. It’s hard to make changes, to begin with but eventually being kind to the environment will come naturally.

Start by making sure all of your equipment is switched off at the end of each day, or if it’s just not being used.
Many of us are guilty of switching off the monitor of our computer but leaving the desktop switched on, or leaving the printer on overnight. Sometimes the overhead lights are being used when there’s enough natural sunlight. This is a complete waste of energy and will boost the utility bills unnecessarily.
Perhaps it might be worth setting up an alert so that you remember to switch off your computer before you leave. It won’t hurt to remind your colleagues to do the same thing.
You should ditch the post-it notes; bits of scrap paper or even reminders on your phone are more economical.
Essentially, the trick is to be more aware of your behaviour in the office.
Are you using something that can be recycled? Do you have a refillable water bottle rather than using a plastic cup? Are you printing something that can be sent via email? Do you wait until the evening when electricity is cheaper to print a big job? Do you print in colour?
In fact, when it comes to printing, your company might be wise to consult a managed print service, as they can help reduce waste.
By making small changes yourself, your colleagues will probably start to follow suit. This is great because when an establishment can show that it is environmentally conscious, it is more likely to attract positive attention and potential customers.
Research actually shows that people are happy to spend more money on products and services if the company is eco-friendly.
This is something that’s worth taking forward to your employer so that he or she can help you convince the rest of the staff to make some positive changes to become less wasteful.
