Nutrition checks at Pets at Home

Sally is a rescue dog and for her age (at least 13) I think she is getting on pretty well, of course she has the vet check-ups she needs twice a year and from those we have learned we need to be careful with what she eats, she takes tablets for her joints and is getting the odd ‘old lady’ problem, but over all, she still has a spring in her step and is loving life.

Even after all these years of dog ownership, I have found I still have a lot to learn, not only about Sally, but about the shops we often end up in and one of the things I found out recently was Pets at Home offer nutrition health checks.

These checks can be done at most Pets at Home stores by a trained member of staff and they can be as quick or as long as you like – it really depends on the time you have to spare.

Myself and my Mum recently took Sally to be checked over by a lovely member of staff at our local Pets at Home and we were both amazed at how in-depth the session was. Taking over an hour in total they took time to check her weight, eyes, ears, paws (in between giving her a lot of fuss), as well as giving us hints and tips on keeping her in tiptop condition.

I proudly have to say they said Sally is in great condition for her age and as well as checking her out for any obvious issues that may well need dealing and checking with us if she was wormed and flea’d, they also offered advice on what would be a good food for Sally.

In doing this they went through all the food they had to sell, we quickly decided not to go for something that was bulked up with lots of grains and cereal, dogs don’t need either and actually can’t digest them well, so while meals containing a lot are cheaper – it definitely isn’t as good for your pet (you can even buy completely grain and cereal free foods these days if you fancy cutting it out).

We decided for Sally we would try Wainwright’s Mature Complete Dog Food with Salmon and Potato, this specially formulated for older dogs food takes out many of the ingredients that do cause issues with many dogs, also as it is a mature dog food it contains Glucosamine, something I would recommend to any dog own to help keep their pets joins more supple.

In the long run we probably won’t change Sally over to the Wainwright’s completely – after all she does have to eat a prescription diet, but it is definitely something we can give her for a change. When it comes to the Pets at Home nutrition appointments I really recommend them to everyone, they are completely free and are available for both dogs and cats, with the dogs appointments coming with a full health check up to and when you have picked the food you want, well Pets at Home give you a couple of vouchers to help you get going on it and if it turns out not to be right, you can go back and try something else.
