How to Leave Your Home Safe when you Go Away
Going away is an exciting time and while it used to be something that was kept between close friends and family, with the rise of social media it has become something that many people share as an update or status.
Of course on the whole people are trust worthy and reliable, however we don’t always know the people who have access to our timelines, or we may accidently post something as public, when meaning to keep it quiet. With the end result, it accidently ending up in the hands of someone we wish hadn’t known.
Of course there are ways to help keep your home a little safer while you are gone, from turning off everything, bar the essentials, to using light switch timers and asking someone you know and trust to keep an eye on your home.
Chill a cheap home insurance company, took to the airports of Ireland, to check in with some travellers on how they made sure their home was secure when they went away. This is what they found out:
So if you are heading off to try and catch some winter sun this winter, please do remember to try and make sure your home is as secure and safe as possible. Meaning the only thing you are coming home to, is the wonderful feeling of your own bed.
How do you keep your home safe, when you go away?

Thank you for all these suggestions it really makes you think that you need to be on top of all these things!
These are all great tips to keep your home safe while you go away. It is so important I believe to make people think you are home with the timers. The people that tell everyone on social media are just basically advertising to burglars. Thanks for sharing the tips.
These are really great tips one that I will need to start practicing once I move into my own place soon. Thank you for sharing them 🙂
I’m lucky in that I haven’t had to think about this yet! I still live with my parents so when I go away, they’re still home and I don’t have to think twice about security. I’m moving out at the end of the year though so I’ll definitely have to keep all of these ideas in mind. 🙂

Thank you for these tips! They are really helpful for me.
It’s so important to make sure that your home is secure while you are away. You don’t want anything to happen and ruin your vacation.
Great tips! The light timers kind of remind me of the Home Alone movie with Macauly Culkin. Had a great laugh with the movie.
I don’t tend to do a lot when I go away as I live in an active block of flats so I’m usually pretty lucky x
Ah that’s a plus to living in a flat block I think. x
Great tips, we have a light timer and have really good neighbors who keep an eye out.
So helpful! I definitely need to make my house more secure when I go away x
I’m really lucky as if I go away my dads home to take care of my cats Millie and daisy, but this definitely something I’d keep in mind for the future xx
Aww bet they get pampered while they are being looked after as well 🙂 x
We have lots of safety options in place when we go away. A good old fashioned alarm and an app that we can access to turn lights on/off etc. Jo x
That is fantastic – I want to try and get an alarm and perhaps some cameras as well. x
Chill insurance sounds like it would help soothe all our house worries as it can be difficult to leave a home behind when you are away.
Great tips on how to keep the home safe while you’re gone. Usually we keep a light on at night and we actually have somebody stay at the house since we have a dog. It really helps keep the house looking lived in when we are not there.
Ah that is always good then – we always take our pooch with us so I’m sure people notice there isn’t a dark barking at the window anymore. x
Thanks for the tips! I always get so scared when I go away, as I have heard some absolute horror stories from friends!
These are great tips. We don’t get to go away often because of our dogs, but when we do, there is always someone home with them!
Great post! It’s mostly common sense, but I haven’t considered some of these useful ones. I’ve used light timers before and think they’re good
They are fab aren’t they – I must get some installed here as I didn’t bring our old ones with us.x
We try to get a house sitter and usually our youngest daughter will come down and do that for us. With four pets, it’s essential.
We never publish on social media when we are away from home and it just blows me away that people still do that! Once we were gone for 2 months while my hubby did job training and left my Mom and daughter in our home. We never once talked about it on social media so ensure their safety in our absence.
This is great information!
It is crazy isn’t it – I did a bit while we were away last time as I was on a review trip and they had asked, but tried to keep it vague to if I was away – away or on a day trip (was only a weekend away) and then did the bulk when we got back. x
Useful tips! I always leave the keys with a couple of friends and ask to keep an eye.
The same here luckily in our new place we have a lovely next door neighbour who has a key and pops in to check on the guinea pigs when we go away. x
Great tips! I usually do all of these except the light timers. I’m in an old home, converted into apartments, so, my neighbors usually keep an eye on things too. Thanks for sharing!
I need to try and get a timer for here I have to admit, we had a great one at the old place would switch the porch on and off but we don’t have a porch light here so didn’t bring it. x
Great post, luckily there is always someone in our house but have done these before when house has been empty
That’s the best thing if you can always have someone at home 🙂 X
Great post! I always ask my neighbors to keep a lookout and have friends/family stop by as well.
It is so good when you can trust your neighbours to keep an eye on your home. x
Oh lights on a timer, neighbours popping in, keep the activity going. It’s important to keep the house safe while away, great tips x
It really is I think a lot of people forget that it is quite easy to spot when people are away. x
We always stop the mail delivery when we’re away so that the mailbox is not running over. We also get our friends to stop by occasionally so that the house doesn’t look empty. Having lights on a timer is a big plus also.
That’s a good idea, I need to try and remember to get the mail to be held while we are away in future. x
Some good tips about keeping your home safe while on vacation.
