How to Leave Your Home Safe when you Go Away
Going away is an exciting time and while it used to be something that was kept between close friends and family, with the rise of social media it has become something that many people share as an update or status.
Of course on the whole people are trust worthy and reliable, however we don’t always know the people who have access to our timelines, or we may accidently post something as public, when meaning to keep it quiet. With the end result, it accidently ending up in the hands of someone we wish hadn’t known.
Of course there are ways to help keep your home a little safer while you are gone, from turning off everything, bar the essentials, to using light switch timers and asking someone you know and trust to keep an eye on your home.
Chill a cheap home insurance company, took to the airports of Ireland, to check in with some travellers on how they made sure their home was secure when they went away. This is what they found out:
So if you are heading off to try and catch some winter sun this winter, please do remember to try and make sure your home is as secure and safe as possible. Meaning the only thing you are coming home to, is the wonderful feeling of your own bed.

Some really great tips here. We rely on our neighbours to keep an eye on things and take in the post when we’re away, it’s very reassuring to know the house isn’t looking completely abandoned.
Thankfully because of Hudson the house is never empty but we would do most of these if it was.
These are really great tips before leaving home! We like to keep a light on at night and we also stop our mail delivery, too. We’re usually not gone for a long period of time as well.

Yup, I worry about my home when I’m away. Actually, I only post my travel if my family is still home. If all of us are out of town, I usually wait to post pictures. Even though the alarm system is on and family close by I still worry.
Great tips, we have had quite a few burglaries in our area so I will make sure my neighbours have a read too.

Ah sounds like you are well protected at your home – I think if you are it isn’t so bad. x
I always get really worried about this since we have been burgled here before! Our security is tight now and if we go away we always get someone to look after the house!

Nice reminder post to make sure that your house is safe and secure for when you leave on vacation.
I never tell anyone when we are leaving but I do post images on vacation. But, my husband is a bit of a whack-o when we travel. He sets of lights on timers, leaves lights on upstairs and downstairs. He has tv’s on timers and lights as well.
Thank you for all these suggestions it really makes you think that you need to be on top of all these things!
These are all great tips to keep your home safe while you go away. It is so important I believe to make people think you are home with the timers. The people that tell everyone on social media are just basically advertising to burglars. Thanks for sharing the tips.

I’m lucky in that I haven’t had to think about this yet! I still live with my parents so when I go away, they’re still home and I don’t have to think twice about security. I’m moving out at the end of the year though so I’ll definitely have to keep all of these ideas in mind. 🙂

Aww bet they get pampered while they are being looked after as well 🙂 x
We have lots of safety options in place when we go away. A good old fashioned alarm and an app that we can access to turn lights on/off etc. Jo x

We try to get a house sitter and usually our youngest daughter will come down and do that for us. With four pets, it’s essential.
We never publish on social media when we are away from home and it just blows me away that people still do that! Once we were gone for 2 months while my hubby did job training and left my Mom and daughter in our home. We never once talked about it on social media so ensure their safety in our absence.
This is great information!
It is crazy isn’t it – I did a bit while we were away last time as I was on a review trip and they had asked, but tried to keep it vague to if I was away – away or on a day trip (was only a weekend away) and then did the bulk when we got back. x
