How To Stay Active As You Get Older
Maintaining your health and well-being becomes even more important in later life. Many aspects should be taken care of to the best of your ability – eating a balanced diet, getting sufficient sleep, interacting socially and having a purpose are all highly recommended.
Staying active is another crucial element, although exercising regularly can become more of a challenge. You might not be able to lift heavy weights or run a marathon, but finding ways that work for you is essential.
Why is staying active important?
Exercise is important at all stages of life to boost your physical health. As you get older, physical activity helps to maintain your cardiovascular, muscular and musculoskeletal systems, preserve your cognitive function, improve your resilience and reduce your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease.
Looking after your mental health is equally as vital. Physical activity can help to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, which many people struggle with throughout life. Engaging in group activities is also a great way to maintain social connections while getting some movement.

How can I stay active in later life?
You should look to find an activity that isn’t too challenging for you but isn’t too comfortable to negate many of the benefits of exercise. Here are some ideas:
Play with family
One of the best ways you can stay active is to play with family members, particularly if you have children or grandchildren. Their energy can help to make activities more enjoyable, and you get to spend some quality time together.
You can play ball games in the garden – it’s not too expensive to buy a cricket ball and bat, just watch out for the windows! Alternatively, you can go on family bike rides or go to the local playground. Get involved with whatever your little ones enjoy and you’ll surely have fun while getting that all-important physical activity.
Sports and activity groups
If you want to engage with others nearer your age, playing in sports and activity groups is a fun way to stay active and be more social. This could be a cycling, bowls or walking group, or a sports team if you still have a little more competition left in you.
You can join any sort of group, no matter your background in exercise or physical activity. It’s never too late to try something new!
Get outdoors
One of the most simple ways to boost your activity levels is to just get outside. Go for a walk, do some gardening or leave the car at home on your next shopping trip. Most activities outdoors are free and easy to prepare for, so just give something a go and see how you like it. Good luck!
