How To Create A Serene Bedroom Retreat
AD
There’s nothing better than coming home at the end of the day and curling up in a relaxing bedroom. A place for you to unwind, there’s no denying how important your bedroom design is. The right elements can help create a retreat for you to relax in, improving your mood and well-being.
From fresh colours to touches of nature, with a few small changes, you can turn your bedroom into a space that’s made for rejuvenation. Not sure where to start? Keep reading because we’ll share our top tips for creating a serene bedroom retreat.
Craft a tranquil colour palette

Serenity starts with a tranquil colour palette. The colours you choose can influence your mood, with the wrong choices leaving you feeling unsettled and even stressed.
While colour trends can shift and change with new designs, here are some key colours that you can use to transform your palette:
- Soft pastels: baby blue, baby pink, lemon yellow, mint green or lavender
- Calming neutrals: beige, blue-grey, cream, white, tan or light grey
- Cool tones: variations of blue, green or grey
- Earthy hues: brown, grass green, sand or tan
- Dark tones: emerald green, midnight blue or deep purple
While your bedroom should encourage relaxation and calm, there’s room for bright colours and patterns too. In fact, bold colours like yellow or vibrant greens can energise your space, bringing a boost of liveliness to your room.
Create a cosy sleeping space
No bedroom is complete without a cosy sleeping space. From your bed to your overall space, there are plenty of ways to add comfort and softness to your bedroom.
Start with your bed. Is it time for your pillows and linen to have a refresh? Breathable fabrics are worth investing in. Organic cotton and bamboo are good options because they are soft and help regulate your body temperature. Make sure to add plenty of soft textures like fluffy quilts or soft throw rugs.
Before settling on designs, refer back to your colour palette. If you have a neutral theme, a textured quilt in a subtle hue can add warmth and depth to the room. Or, if you have chosen a pastel palette, a pale pink and white floral design may be the right fit.
Your bed isn’t the only consideration if you want a cosy space. Luxury vinyl flooring in a natural timber look design can help add warmth to your space. Plus, they’re durable and easy to maintain. To add extra cosiness, opt for a rug that feels soft underfoot.
Don’t forget about other elements like adding soft curtains and ambient lighting – all of which can help contribute to the overall cosy feel of your bedroom.
Use lighting to set the mood

Just like colour, lighting can have a direct impact on your mood. If the room is too dark it can feel gloomy. Bright, stark lighting on the other hand, can overwhelm your senses and can make it hard to switch off and unwind.
So, how do you get the balance right? It all starts with your natural lighting. If you have big windows, try to keep them clear by upgrading your curtains or blinds. You can also use things like a mirror to help reflect light throughout your space.
You can also use artificial light to help enhance the space. Think fairy lights strung across your bed head, or a lamp with a warm globe. You can also use things like candles to create a soft, flickering light – perfect for adding those cosy-retreat vibes.
Declutter for a peaceful environment
There’s no quicker way to ruin the serene vibes in your bedroom than with clutter. Whether it’s knick knacks on every surface, or an overflowing wardrobe, it’s easy for things to build up over time.
Decluttering can take time, but by ensuring that everything has a home, you can create a space that’s organised.
- First, start by going through all your things and deciding whether you want to keep, donate or throw them away.
- Then get organised and ensure that everything has a home. Try to add storage solutions to help keep things neat and tidy.
- Under bed storage can help maximise space. If your bed base doesn’t have drawers, consider sealed plastic tubs to rotate clothing that’s not in season.
- Think about ways to keep your surfaces clear. It can be as simple as putting baskets at the top of your wardrobe, or adding built-in shelves to your walls.
Incorporate nature for added calm

There’s no denying that nature and relaxation go hand-in-hand. After all, there’s a reason why so many people get outside into the great outdoors to relax and unwind.
There are a few easy ways to integrate nature into your space, bringing relaxation to you. Love the serenity of green forests? Create a serene retreat with warm wood tones and earthy greens and browns. From using colours on your walls, to adding warmth with hybrid flooring, there are plenty of ways to bring the outdoors into your bedroom.
Do you prefer a relaxing beachside? Get inspired by the soft blues and sandy tones of your favourite spot and incorporate them into your bedroom. Think white billowing curtains, neutral coloured bed linen and nautical inspired prints on your walls.
Enjoy your serene bedroom retreat
Keep in mind that everyone’s idea of a serene bedroom retreat will be slightly different. Take the time to think about when you feel the most relaxed, and what things normally help you to unwind. With this in mind, you can create a space that truly reflects you and your needs. Remember, your room makeover can be a gradual process. The only goal is to create a haven where you can rest and recharge.

Our bedroom used to be full of clutter and it doesn’t make you feel good so we sorted it and painted it a different colour and the difference is unreal. Everyone needs a calm bedroom to relax in.
I need to get ours sorted but waiting to move it’s like do I bother now or do I just wait it out.
Really enjoyed reading this, some great advice, thank you
You are welcome I am glad you enjoyed it!
This looks fab, some really great advice, I love having a calm blue colour in my room.

Those bedroom photos look gorgeous! I’m working on softening the lighting in mine and I am also considering wood-effect luxury vinyl flooring. It’s so practical and so pretty.

Light is so important to having a restful bedroom
I think sunlight always freshens things up doesn’t it?
So much to consider. I will be decorating my new loft extension bedroom soon so timely pointers for me thanks
Ohh good luck with sorting out your extension I hope it goes well.
It helps to have big windows to let as much light in as possible. It really lifts the mood.
Definitely light is such an important part of a room and being able to let me know!
I don’t think my bedroom could ever be called ‘serene’ but I love it.
As long as you love it that is all that matters!
A lovely blog post. I like pastel colours in my bedroom and pretty bedside lamps, great for reading in bed. I also like a dark room when I am sleeping and I have black out curtains, very reasonably priced from Next
Black out curtains are great – ours are from Next as well and have been washed and still work so well!
