How To Create A Cosy And Comfortable Home For Your Pup

As a dog parent, there’s no better feeling than knowing you’ve created a safe and comfortable home for your furry friend. After all, dogs end up spending just as much time at home as we do (if not more), so it’s important to ensure your house or backyard is a place they enjoy. 

From providing your pup with everything they need, to ensuring your house is fully puppy-proof (and safe) – there are plenty of factors to consider. So without further ado, here are some tips for creating a comfy, nurturing space for your dog.

Provide a safe place for them to eat and drink

Providing your dog with a comfortable, designated space for them to eat and drink helps them to feel safe, boosting their positive associations with meal time and cultivating their overall happiness. Pick out an area where they have plenty of room to move (dogs can be messy eaters!) and where they won’t risk becoming a trip hazard in high-traffic zones. 

For hassle-free, durable bowls that won’t leak any nasty chemicals into your dog’s food, opt for high-quality stainless steel pet bowls for both food and water. If you have multiple dogs, try providing each of them with their own individual feeding bowl (spaced strategically apart) so Rex and Fido can feast fuss-free! 

Get creative with the space you have

Just like us, dogs need their own personal space, so it’s important they have somewhere to retreat when they need that little break (whether from little hands or just to ponder life’s meaning). In apartments and smaller spaces this can be a little difficult, however there are ways to get creative with the area you have to ensure your dog gets a space of their own. 

Dogs love to snooze, so providing your pup with a soft, comfy dog bed where they can sleep is crucial (even if they’re in the habit of jumping into yours!). Having a space to run around is so important for a dog’s well-being, so be sure to also prioritise this whenever possible. A fenced backyard is great, but a dog run in a smaller area still offers them a chance to be outside, just make sure there’s plenty of shade for those warmer days. Otherwise, plenty of walks around the block will do the trick.

Toys, toys, toys!

Dogs have active minds and keeping them stimulated – especially when you’re not home – plays a big part in their overall well-being. There are plenty of ways to provide your pup with entertainment, but one of the most obvious is dog toys. From squeaky toys to tug ropes and other chew toys, there’s no shortage of options to choose from. 

Whether they’re chewing on them, snuggling up with them or carrying them around everywhere they go – toys are the perfect way to stave off boredom and keep them out of mischief (and your favourite pot plants). 

Dog-friendly decor

Even the most obedient pups can be a handful sometimes, and this can sometimes escalate when you leave the house. After a long day, the last thing you need is to be cleaning up destroyed dog beds. Investing in some dog-friendly decor can go a long way towards puppy-proofing your space and keeping your mind at ease when you’re not at home. 

From washable slipcovers for your furniture to a designated play zone, mapping out areas available to your pooch while you’re out can help minimise any oopsies (or at least, better contain them). 

Keep them safe

Perhaps most important of all when it comes to creating a comfortable and cosy home for your pup is their safety. Puppy-proofing is an essential part of having a dog in your home or yard, and keeping Fido within your boundary with secure fencing is a top priority. 

Puppies love digging around—whether it’s in the yard or the rubbish bin—so it’s important to keep them preoccupied, and your bins covered and out of nostril range. Dogs, especially dopey puppies, can also be a little clumsy at times. Help protect them from themselves by blocking off high ledges or tall furniture to avoid accidental falls. 

Most dogs have a knack for getting involved in a bit of mischief, but as long as your space is puppy-friendly, you can help avoid tempting them into trouble.

With all of this in mind, go forth and get creative! A dog can fill your life with so much joy and love, and providing them with a safe and comfortable home is the perfect way to return the favour and show them just how much you care.
