There might be hair being coloured at hair salons, but going green isn’t a likely colour choice, right? Wrong. Hair salons are adopting ways to bring a shade of Green energy into their salons, supporting the growing awareness of sustainable energy.

Salons are power dependent, with blow waves being an essential service to hair salon clientele. So when the power is out, pounds become pennies, and clients will seek services elsewhere, with salons powered by renewable energy resources.

To sustain the salon business, implementing green energy solutions will secure salon success.

1.1 Free from Formeldahyde

• As salon professionals, we are no strangers to the controversy surrounding the popularity of keratin treatments.
• A lot of companies hide behind false claims of being formaldehyde-free, but in laboratory tests, many of these companies’ keratin treatments were found to have extremely high levels of formaldehyde. Ask for lab reports or request a sample to lab test!
• Formaldehyde is found organically in nature but is a known human carcinogen (cancer-causing). Thus, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established regulations and limits on the emission of formaldehyde from some industrial facilities and required them to report the amount of formaldehyde used in their products.

1.2 Free from Ammonia

• Choosing to offer your clients ammonia-free hair colour is one of the best things you can do for both their health and yours. Not only has ammonia been linked to many health issues, it also makes your salon an incubator for toxic smells and fumes.
• Ammonia is used to blast open the cuticle so that the colour molecules can reach inside the hair. Due to the corrosive effects of ammonia, the hair’s pH is then altered to an extreme and has a hard time closing; thus, locking in the beautiful colour you just applied.

• To begin, you should do what you can to reduce your water usage. 
• Use water-saving devices such as low-flow showerheads or low-volume faucets for washing hands to save water and energy costs; and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants that run from fossil fuels like coal or natural gas (which emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere).

2.2 Use sustainable products

• If you decide to offer green hair care products in your salon, it will be up to you (as an employer) to educate and train your staff about how these products work and what their benefits are. 
• This type of education goes a long way toward making sure that customers feel comfortable using these kinds of products at home after leaving your salons!
• Use products with natural ingredients.
• Choose products that are not tested on animals.
• Use biodegradable and/or vegan products whenever possible to avoid waste.

• One of the easiest ways to go green at your salon is by using reusable, recyclable hair towels. 
• Using a towel made from recycled materials means that it can be reused and will last longer than traditional cloth towels because it doesn’t have to be replaced as often.

2.4 Use refillable, reusable spray bottles

If you find yourself spray-bottle obsessed, here are some ways to use a reusable bottle:

• Use less product. Spraying a mistier amount of water helps keep your hair more hydrated and less crunchy. 
• Make sure it’s clean before refilling it with the product of your choice. Otherwise, old product residue may cause buildup in the nozzle or clog up the tip of the bottle when you try to use it again—and no one likes that!
• Keep an eye on how much liquid is left in a container before buying new ones because they’re cheaper than they once were.
