Here’s How to Make a Better Move
No one ever said that moving was going to be easy. And the reason no one ever said it is because everyone knows better.
Let’s be real and consider some of the things that have to be safely transported in a move:
- Large, heavy furniture
- Large pieces of glass in the form of mirrors, TVs and computer monitors
- Sensitive and expensive electronics
- Frozen and refrigerated food
- Items that can’t be easily disassembled like pianos
- Vehicles, boats, trailers
- Countless, nameless little things that are easily lost
When one considers what all is involved with moving, it is a wonder anyone does it at all, let alone, does it successfully. This is why people trust big moves to national companies like North American Van Lines and others at that level of name recognition and longevity.
The lowest price is trumped by being bonded and licensed. And when you have items that are hard to pack and hard to move, that is when the heavy hitters earn their keep.
So while moving is increasingly difficult no matter how many times you do it, there are some things you learn along the way that can make things a bit easier. So while the first item in a tenant’s guide to a new home should be to get the best mover you can afford, we have a few other tips that can make the transition easier.
Buy Good Moving Boxes
There are many reasons to buy moving boxes as opposed to scrounging free ones. Here is a short list:
- Moving boxes will be in good shape
- They will be roughly the same size and easy to stack
- They will all have lids
- They will be less likely to be housing insects that hide out in old boxes
An orderly move starts with good moving boxes. So try to avoid the lure of free moving boxes.
You might get lucky and get good ones. But you do not want to leave something that important to luck.
Take control of the move by taking control of the boxes.
Don’t Over Pack the Boxes
One of the biggest mistakes is trying to save money by cutting corners. And one of the easiest ways to cut corners is to overpack moving boxes.
The reasoning is that fewer boxes mean a smaller truck. The movers will have fewer boxes to move.
And somehow, that will be less work for you on the other side. All of this is wrong.
What really happens when you overpack boxes is that boxes become destabilised and start to break. Boxes become too heavy to easily lift and carry.
Boxes get bulbous and misshapen making them hard to stack. The lids become harder to close making the box both unstable and potentially hazardous if things start falling out.
It takes longer and more energy to move one overpacked box than it does to move two perfectly packed and easily stackable boxes. Everything about the move gets worse when you try to cut corners by overpacking boxes.
Unpack Immediately
Some people live with unpacked or partially packed boxes for months after moving. One of the reasons this happens is that they didn’t heed the first two tips.
Poor packing leads to difficult unpacking. The longer you leave boxes around, the more chances you will have of housing box spiders, which will, in turn, ruin what you have in those boxes.
The longer it takes you to unpack, the harder it will be to find basic things you need. And since you do need them, you are likely to repurchase them, thus wasting time, money, and space.
It is always faster to unpack than it is to pack. The job always looks bigger than it really is.
If possible, you should unpack the same day and get those boxes out of there. But if you don’t get it all done right away, you should make it a priority.
The sooner you unpack, the sooner you can begin your new life.
Even following the best of tips, moving is neither fun nor easy. But it can be a whole lot less stressful when you start with professional movers.
Purchase quality moving boxes. Don’t overpack boxes.
And unpack as quickly as you can.

My favorite tip here is about unpacking right away. I had my entire new apartment unpacked in less than 2 days because I knew if I didn’t do it then, I’d procrastinate!
