Getting ready for Uni
I was late going to uni, I didn’t start till I was 21 and I decided for me a brick and mortar one wasn’t right. I didn’t do well at school, perhaps due to much of my time being in hospital towards the latter years, but also due to the fact I am not the best person at sitting and doing things when told.
I work much better under my own steam – getting up and making a cup of tea when I want and taking a break when I need.
I never finished my degree. As it was not long after I began my second year that became ill once again, but it is something in the long term I would love to one day return to, after all you’re never too old to learn something new.
But on the flip side if I hadn’t of got ill and had to stop my degree I would never have started this blog in its place.
However and wherever you decide to go to uni there is a lot of preparation that needs to be done. I remember at the start I felt like forms were coming out of my ears as I signed up for the course and the grants I needed.
One of the fun sides of preparing for uni is the shopping. If you are leaving home to attend uni it can often be the first time living away from your parents and so a big learning curve in so many ways, but let’s not think about all the home goods you may need, and think of the good stuff like stationery and perhaps a new computer.
Of course for all that shopping you will need money and with money comes the need to budget. You don’t want to go blowing your student loan on the day it arrives!
Budgeting can at first be very stressful to get used to, especially when you suddenly don’t have cupboards that magically refill.
So that’s why looking at specialised student accounts is often a good idea. They offer many more benefits that your regular current account and it can take just seven days to switch your account to a new provider and start reaping the offerings.

I am 45 years old and I start Uni at the end of this month and I am a bit scared / bit nervous / a lot excited!! Its a 3 year course, so in it for the long haul, but it will be worth it 🙂

One of the things i regret doing is going to university and having that experience but i am happy i had my children young 🙂 x

You’re too true, you are never too old to return to uni. I didn’t move away when I went to uni so I didn’t get the excitement of buying all of my uni stuff, but I got the same sort of feeling when I got my own place! xx
I never went to uni, but instead moved out of home when I was almost 19, that was a big reality check, as it was also gas and electric that was needed and not just food.
Its a great idea to prepare financially for uni life.
Uni is far behind me now, done in an age when PC screens were black and white!

You are never too old, I graduated when I was 33 🙂
I honestly can’t remember much about getting ready except for feeling slightly anxious about whether I would make new friends, which of course I did. Uni years really were the best!!
My son is hopefully going to uni in September, it is such an exciting time for him. He needs a new bank
account too. We have already made a list of things he needs
I started my degree and didn’t finish it, but went back to it a couple of years ago via the Open university and I’m really enjoying it x
The thing that I remember most about getting ready for Uni was sorting out somewhere to live. My daughter is now looking at Unis because she’ll be applying later this year – I can’t believe she’s that age already.
The thing I remember most about my twin daughters getting ready for uni was taking the pair of them to Ikea and filling two shopping trolleys with everything they might possibly need. It was a bittersweet experience dropping them off though as they left home over two consecutive days and we travelled over 500 miles!

I went as a ‘mature student’ in my mid twenties, wish I could do it all over again. I could see that I had a very different experience to all the younger ones.
I agree that it’s never to late to start! I’ve been thinking of going back for my PhD for years…lol 🙂
I think that I will have to learn it all again when my boys go. Uni is so different these days to when I went
It’s amazing how exciting it is to buy your first kettle and so on. Seems daft looking back, but I loved having my own things.

I remember moving to Aberdeen to go to college it was scary, fun and exciting. It was me finally leaving home, being independent (I was 28) and it was also expensive lol. I do not regret it one bit. I agree with needing the money as you will spend a lot at first on the essentials
