Your home is somewhere you should always feel safe, it should feel like a place you can come back to and relax and unwind. However, it is always worth making sure you have taken steps to help improve your home’s security.
This however isn’t something you have to spend a fortune on and can be done by yourself.
So here are some DIY tips to help improve your home’s security.
Reinforce Doors and Windows
There are a number of things you can do to your doors and windows to help reinforce them, after all as entry points they can be a weak link in your home security. You can do this by making sure you add deadbolts and chains to your external doors, while any strike plates which are looking weak or damaged should be replaced with new ones.
When it comes to your windows one thing that is often overlooked is window coverings. While curtains and material blinds will make little to no difference to home security, shutter blinds can actually help.
This is due to the fact they are built to be both durable and long-lasting from wood which is then fitted within the window pane so cannot move around. Depending on the style you go for as well, they can also aid in stopping people from being able to fully see into a room.
Install a Security System
While professional security systems can be costly, there are numerous DIY options available that are both affordable and effective. For instance, I reviewed a wireless, motion-activated CCTV kit back in 2017 which is still going strong.
This sort of camera, alongside smart doorbells, can often be installed by yourself and monitored from wherever you are via your smartphone. This type of security system often also allows you to set off an alarm or speak through the system, giving a sense of you being around.
Secure Outdoor Areas
Your home’s exterior is just as important as its interior when it comes to security. Adequate lighting can deter potential intruders, so install motion-activated lights around your property.
Keeping shrubs and bushes trimmed neatly back can help to eliminate hiding spots, while you may want to install a sturdy fence and gate to restrict access to your back garden.
Create The Illusion You Are Home
Your home is at its most vulnerable while you are away, so always remember to try and create the illusion you are home. Use timers to control lights, radios, or televisions, creating the impression of activity.
As well as having a neighbour collect your mail as if piled-up letters can be spotted through your door it is an easy-to-spot signal of an empty home.
Home security should never be taken lightly. By implementing these tips, you can help to improve your home’s security without breaking the bank.

This is such an important read, smart doorbells reassure so many that they and their homes are safe!
I’d like a smart doorbell system so that I can see who’s at the door before I open it. At the moment, I have to try and peep through the blinds without being seen!
They really are such a good idea, aren’t they? I like that you get an alert from them so you always know what is going on.
Our lovely cat-sitter lives in when we are away, so we never have to worry about the place being empty for more than a few hours.

Sometimes I am very glad that I live in a flat with a two door security system that requires a fob to get in. Can’t imagine the money spent to increase security in a house and to turn on appliances when you’re away won’t be very budget friendly and would just add stress when you’re suppose to be relaxing
That is definitely a plus side to living in a flat, they often have much better security from the get-go as there are multiple doors to get through for many.
Great ideas here. We have recently installed a smart doorbell whic I think was a great investment. We always tell our neighbours when we are going away and we do look out for each other. I live in a small close and not a lot goes on without someone noticing.
