Could You Turn Your Craft Hobby Into An Income
For most people, a craft is nothing more than a hobby. This could be anything from baking to making jewellery to crocheting to metalwork. For others, it’s a skill which can be sold as a service. Turning a craft hobby into an income could be a great way of getting paid to do something that you enjoy. You don’t even have to turn it into a full profession – it could simply remain a side hustle. Here are just a few tips for making money out of a craft.
Research the market
In order for your craft to sell, it has to have a unique selling point. By researching the existing marketing, you can find out how many other people are doing what you’re doing, helping you to find a way of standing out. Research could also help you to set a good price.
Work out the costs
You may need to order in extra materials or outsource a courier service or even upgrade your equipment to turn your craft into a money-making occupation. Funding all of this may require some form of startup finance such as a business loan. Alternatively, you may be able to save up the required funds so that you don’t have to be pay interest. You could even get money from investors if you think you have the potential to make a lot of money from your craft. Work out exactly what your budget so that you know exactly how much funds you need to raise.
Create a brand
Having a brand can help you to look less like a hobbyist and more like a professional artisan. This could be a company name or a logo or even some form of official packaging that gives you a professional identity. This should relate to what makes your company unique.
Promote yourself online
The web is the best place to market your craft business. You can set up a website and social media pages that will help raise awareness of your brand. Platforms like Etsy and Gumtree meanwhile are great advertising platforms. Much of this marketing can be done for free – there’s no need to shell out on a marketing company.
Use your local network
You can also promote your company locally by networking with people in your area. You may be able to encourage local retailers to sell your crafts. There may also be craft fairs that you can attend to sell your homemade items. All in all, don’t underestimate the power of word of mouth – simply telling people about your craft business could help to raise awareness and before you know it friends of friends will be interested and they’ll be telling their friends.

I wish I had some talent when it comes to crafting! I could draw a little but I don’t think it is good enough to turn it into a source of income. My sister and her husband started making leather purses as a hobby, and now it is a profitable side business for them.
My daughter paints and has an etsy shop. No one buys her paintings though, so she’s become discouraged. I told her to hang in there and keep trying.

I’ve always been in awe of people’s creativity when it comes to crafting. Even trying my hand at a how-to Youtube video was not a fail; but, not close to their final outcome! My daughter-in-law has some craft talents. This might be right up her alley.
