Benefits of a Good Night’s Sleep
Achieving a good night’s sleep is often a goal of many of us, finding that perfect spot in the bed, hitting the pillow and falling asleep instantly. It’s often difficult to achieve with external factors coming into play that can affect your sleeping quality and its overall schedule.
Many people don’t see the effects of a good night’s sleep, but Bedworld has a few points that outline its benefits
Significantly Healthier
In a Harvard Medical School Nurses Study, which included 78,000 nurses, it was found that those that worked on the night-shift had a 36% increased risk of breast cancer than their colleagues on the day-shift.
It’s become increasingly important to focus on a good night’s sleep to ensure your health isn’t affected. A bad night’s sleep is directly linked to an increase in obesity, overweight issues and in turn a risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
To avoid these risks it’s best to get on average around 7-8 hours of good sleep per night, which differs between people slightly. As we age, we seem to get less and less sleep, not through choice but through increased chance of disturbed sleep.
Younger children and babies need more sleep which goes from 18-21 hours per day as new-born babies all the way to 9-11 hours’ sleep needed for teenagers.
Lowers Stress Levels
Without a good night’s sleep, you’ll wake up groggy and un-attentive for the day ahead of you, putting you behind before the day has even begun.
Starting off tired and sluggish makes you less patient and more agitated, which will only get worse when having to be in work too. Depending on your job, if you’re in a customer facing role for example, this could only get worse due to incidents that could occur throughout the working day.
Mattresses Matter
Having a good night’s sleep is directly linked to having a quality mattress, a recent study in 2011 found that even a small difference in mattress support (between soft, medium and firm) can greatly affect an individual’s sleep quality.
With a wide range of mattresses, it’s down to the individual to test out each on the showroom floor to decide which is best for them, the study found. Between Pocket Spring, Memory Foam, Adjustable and Pillow Top Mattresses with many more, there’s a large amount of choice to try out.
Did you know about these benefits of a good-nights sleep?

Very true. Good sleep is essential for a healthy life. My current mattress does a pretty good job at relaxing me.
Sleep makes you feel better, but its importance goes way beyond just boosting your mood or banishing under-eye circles. Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more.
I am more productive and full of energy when I get enough sleep at night, that’s why I make sure that I sleep well. I agree with all of these benefits because I experience them too.
This makes me glad that I turned down a job recently working grave yard shifts since I’m sure it would have negatively affected my sleep. It’s hard to get a good sleep during the day and I don’t want any negative health consequences.
Having a newborn doesn’t promote great sleep, but your post is SO true. Our bodies NEED sleep and a great mattress is key.
People need to research mattresses, its not smart to just buy a set that inexpensive. Sleep is really important and you need to start with a great foundation.
I know I need to get more sleep. My stress is off the charts this past month for various reasons. I think that’s what is also hindering my weight loss! Great post!
I definitely could use a good night sleep. Thank you for this post. Definitely bookmarking it!
What a great post. Thoroughly enjoyed reading. Thanks for sharing.. I can’t survive without a good night’s sleep.
I’ve been thinking I need a new mattress for a while now – thanks for confirming. I’ll have to get out hunting one, and soon!
let’s do not forget about beauty benefits 🙂
I could use a good night of sleep. My little 6 month old still thinks he needs to wake me every few hours though lol
If I don’t get a good night’s sleep I feel awful the next day, so I always try to get 7-8 hours in.
I actually saved this post as soon as I saw the title.. I’m having a very hard time going to bed before midnight (or sometimes even one) so I needed this! Thanks for sharing!
Oh no 🙁 I hope you manage to get a good nights sleep soon, it can be so hard on you mentally and physically if you don’t 🙁 X
I wish I could get a good nights rest! So hard with a toddler!
Oh no 🙁 I hope you manage to get one soon! x
Did you know it was national napping day or something this past Monday? After reading this I’ve decided I definitely need to get on a better sleep schedule.
Oh wow how did I not know that! I totally would have napped the day away in celebration 😉
This definitely reminded me of my mattress being way old as well! Also found it very interesting about the nurses, I’m planning an educational session about the effects of shift work on health so that really resonates with me.
Currently trying to persuade the other half we need a new mattress lol. Intresting read thanks
