5 Tips on How to Be a Responsible Pet Owner
Pets are important members of your family that require love, care, time and patience. Whether you own a cat, dog or some other exotic animal, you need to ensure their wellness and safety throughout their lifetime.
There are many things you will think about during your time owning a pet anything from my cat won’t sleep with me anymore to more serious matters around health and behaviour.
The following are critical duties that every pet owner should abide by.
Provide the Right Nutrition
You may want to spoil your pet by giving them the world. But they need certain restrictions, especially when it comes to their diet. Similar to humans, pets require the right nutrition to live a healthy and long life. Your vet can be instrumental in helping you decide what kind of food and how much.
Although your pet may look at you longingly during meal time, keeping them on a diet that’s portion-controlled prevents weight-related illnesses. Snacks should also be given in moderation. In between meals treats could include healthy options such as green beans, carrots, lettuce, spinach, catnip and cat grass.
Always check with your veterinarian before giving your pet any type of food. You should also have plenty of fresh water accessible for your pet.

Training and Socialisation
A well-behaved pet will be a loyal lifetime companion. But they need training and socialisation. Check for training classes in your community to help introduce your pet to basic commands such as sit, stay, down, come and heel. If you notice behavioural issues in your pet, you need to address them immediately.
Spay and Neutering
Research has shown that pets who are spayed or neutered have significantly fewer health issues during their lifespan. They may also live a considerably longer time. Although you may think it’s cute for your pet to have a litter of puppies or kittens, the additional guests are costly and quite a huge responsibility.
Pets who are spayed or neutered also have fewer behavioural issues. If you’re unsure of the best time to have your pet fixed, consult with your veterinarian. They will also be able to guide you through the proper aftercare of the surgery.

Grooming and Vet Care
Your pet will need to make regular trips to the vet throughout their life span. During the visits, they’ll assess their weight, heart, eye and hip health. They’ll also need routine vaccinations and medications to prevent ticks, fleas and heartworms.
Emergencies can also happen unexpectedly. As a pet owner, you need to ensure that your pet receives the necessary medical care. Proper grooming habits such as brushing the pet’s fur and teeth, cleaning ears and bathing certain pets can help prevent illness and diseases.
If you live in an apartment or want to train your dog to use a specific area when you are out then looking into inside dog potty grass could be a good way to get them into good toileting habits.
Identification
While you may take preventive measures to ensure your pet doesn’t get lost, escapes can happen. You can do your part to make sure your pet makes it back home safely by putting a collar on your pet with the proper identification. The tag should contain your phone number, pet’s name, address and email address.
For extra peace of mind, a safe wireless dog fence system can help keep your pet within a designated area without the need for physical fencing. Using GPS or radio signals, these systems work with a collar to gently deter dogs from wandering too far.
You can also have your pet microchipped. The procedure begins by placing the chip under their skin. Performed at your vet’s office, the process is also painless and inexpensive. If your pet gets lost, the signal is transmitted and displays the owner’s information.
You mean the world to your pet. They crave your attention, love and time. You can reward them for their love and devotion by being a responsible and loving pet owner.

Great advice. I had my cats spayed and chipped at 6 months old and they have vaccinations once-per-year. I wouldn’t let them out otherwise it’s not worth the risk.
