5 tips to the perfect movie night in this autumn
With the nights drawing in and the weather getting colder, there is no better time to treat yourself to a movie night, no matter if you’re catching a movie on your own or with friends and family, they are always a good night and can really help boost your mood when it comes to re-watching old favourites or catching up with recent releases.
Myself and Ash do love a good movie night in (I find cinema seats way to uncomfortable and you can’t just pause when you need a loo break) and here are five of my top tips for a movie night at home.
Make sure you have the right electronic equipment.
Now this might seem obvious but what happens if you invite a friend round, tell them to grab a movie and they come armed with a Blu-ray and you only have a DVD player – night ruined! Personally, I’m thinking of upgrading our TV sometime soon, my eyesight is getting steadily worse and a bigger one might be just what I need, some of the Smart TVs from Panasonic look just up my street (I actually had to sit on the floor watching Unfriended so I could read the screen).
Snacks
No movie night is complete without snacks and drinks – so why not mix up some of your favourite drinks and ready the popcorn (or chocolate) so you can snack all the way through?
Think carefully about the film.
Now while I am a huge fan of horror films, having a night dedicated to watching the Saw films might not be up everyone’s street, so do take into consideration the tastes of all those who are coming and don’t go scaring the heck out of someone who isn’t into horror films. Perhaps look at recent releases this week, and try to find a film which is a pretty good all-rounder with some action, comedy or adventure.
Make yourself comfortable.
Getting comfortable is different for everyone, for me it means snuggling down on the sofa with a selection of cushions and a nice blanket to keep myself warm, comfy and cosy as the movie plays. Whatever helps you get comfortable make sure you’re sitting ready, before you press play.
Think about the lighting.
Turning down the lights and using a softer alternative such as lamps, fairy lights or candles can make a wonderful atmosphere for movie time and might just stop people fiddling with other items if they can’t see them quite well.
So that’s my five tips, but, what would you suggest doing to make a perfect movie evening?

We love movie night but we sometimes struggle to find a film that we all want to watch now the kids are a bit older x
Having movie nights in the Fall is so much fun. It’s a great way to spend some time with your loved ones and catch a great film.
I love snuggling up on a movie night, popcorn, blankets and low lighting – perfect!!
It’s definitely the right time of year for snuggling up on the sofa with a good film – we love it here. I like to get big bags of sweet/salty popcorn, definitely my favourite movie snack
I love a good movie night.. got to have some decent snacks though, I agree
Love love love movie nights! We usually pile into my bed (all 6 of us) with extra blankets and duvets, and I am always the first to fall asleep!!
I totally admit I’m awful for falling asleep during films – took me three attempts to watch The Woman in Black – I’ve never lived that down..
Great tips! I love movie nights in and doing them as a family. So these are some great tips!
Snacks are so important!!! You don’t want to be getting up during the movie and missing out. I have a problem with getting too comfortable and falling asleep! haha
I always found it such a pain to try and find a movie that we all liked, be it family or friends as a groups. Maybe I am just too picky when it comes to movies!!
I love movie nights and cuddling up with a big blanket and eating warm buttery popcorn!
We move our sofa straight in front the TV for optimum viewing! x

I love having movie nights in the Autumn/Winter, I like to build a fort, get a takeaway or tasty treats, crank up the surround sound and have a home cinema experience. So much better than going out!
I love the idea of a film fort that AWESOME! x
We would definitely have to avoid Saw films in this house. I really don’t like horror. I think that movie nights are a great idea for making the most of the dark nights, and I like to have a glass of wine with ours as a treat
I know a lot of people who aren’t – I would definite not pick them for a movie night unless I know everyone else was a fan. Wouldn’t want people leaving with nightmares. x
We dont really do movie nights but we really should
I love all of these tips but we all know it is really all about the snacks! I love a good bowl of popcorn with my movie and a chocolate bar too.
I love movie nights in the fall. Cozy up with the hubs & watch a good movie 😛
Sounds like a great movie night. You definitely have to have snacks. that would be an epic fail.
Great tips! My family started to do family movie night and it is something we really look forward to! Snacks are definitely a must!
Snacks are definitely #1 on our movie night list. I also think lighting is very important. Too low, I fall asleep. Too high, I can’t concentrate.
These are important things to consider when hosting! A movie party without snacks is a disaster.
Oh my, I can’t imagine anything worse thana night of horror films! Mich x
Oh and a blanky! Whenever I curl up for a movie night, I have to have a blanky 🙂 …and ice cream! xx
Great top 5.
I would just add wine and duvet. Maybe an open fire.
I am due a movie night!
