Why You Should Invest In A Record Player
Who could have imagined back during the heyday of CDs in the 90s that in 2023 we’d be buying more vinyl records than ever before? But in 2022, vinyl sales officially overtook CD sales for the first time this century. Listening to vinyl, you see, is a much more absorbing and involved process than simply streaming music on Spotify. It’s about turning listening to music into an event. Something more than just sticking it on in the background.
But aside from the obvious fashionable nature of its resurgence in recent years, why should you invest in a vinyl record player in 2023?
Better sound quality
There is some wisdom in the concept that vinyl records sound better because of their larger surface area and analogue sound. There is less compression required to fit music onto a piece of vinyl so they tend to be a lot louder and fuller sounding than CDs and streaming. Yes, they will pick up imperfections (crackles) over time but honestly, this only adds to the immersive and unique experience.

A more immersive listening experience
Many people (particularly children and teenagers) choose to listen to music today as playlists and individual songs. But when most artists put an album out they intend for it to be listening from start to finish. There’s a real artistry to sequencing an album that can be truly experienced and understood when listening to a record from Side A, track 1 to Side B, track 10. There’s something of a ritual to getting up and physically turning over the album too. This makes you feel more connected to the music.
They can be legitimate works of art
While a CD is always going to look like a CD, vinyl records are much larger and can be hung on your wall as genuine works of art. From coloured records to picture disks and even more ambitious gatefold releases with multiple pages and artbooks, some vinyl records can be awe-inspiring pieces of art even before you place the record on your record player.
Rediscover old favourites and enjoy new albums
You can get the best of both worlds with a vinyl collection. You can head onto eBay or hit up your local car boot sale to find some old favourites from the past or indulge in the latest big releases. Did you know, for example, that Harry Styles had the biggest vinyl release of 2022? Vinyl isn’t just for your parents anymore. It’s for everybody!
