#MotherAgain – Battersea Dogs Home
Sally didn’t have the best start in life and while we don’t know her full story her body language and scarring tells us some stories. One of those was she had, had a lot of puppies, so many so her body was left in a bad way from them, with extended teats, a really bad season (we had to wait for her first with us to know if she had already been spayed) and finally the removal her womb showed it was badly infected (she wrote her own post about being a #MotherAgain here).
The sad thing is people are doing this to certain breeds on purpose, making them have litter after litter until they are disposed of. Of course this practice doesn’t just affect the mothers, but also the puppies they produce, with many suffering from medical conditions and birth defects.
Battersea Dogs Home are trying to bring more light to this matter with the start of their #MotherAgain campaign, which shares stories of over bred dogs that have arrived with them, as well as dogs which show the obvious defects of being a pup of such a mother.
They want the help of all of us, to put an end to back street breeding; by bringing regulations which would mean:
A ban on the sale of puppies under eight weeks’ old
The introduction of a required breeding licence for any household producing two or more litters per year.
It takes just a matter of seconds to write to your local MP via the #MotherAgain – End Backstreet Breeding website as all you need to do is enter your address details, while the website does the work of finding your local MP and sending the letter to them.
So please can you spare just a few minutes and help put a stop to this terrible practice.
Poor Sally. These people need serious punishment.
I will definitely do this, we just recently adopted a 6 year old Beagle, he’s an absolute treasure, but we’re his 3rd family, and he begun life in a cage in a laboratory being tested on. It’s something I absolutely cannot get my head around, why treat animals so poorly, for me it’s one look in their eyes and I turn into the world’s biggest softie, and they always come first in my life

It breaks my heart. I got my boy from a rescue – his problem he wouldn’t perform as a stud and so was neglected and abused. 2 years on we’re still undoing the damage. Puppy mills, forced breeding, buying cheap puppies – there must be more that can be done

She’s so adorable and I’m sure will grow to be a lovely family dog due to all the loving care you’re giving her. It breaks my heart to hear how animals can be so mistreated. Thanks goodness for charities and people like yourself who care and are able to help. I was brought up with dogs as family pets and, due to personal circumstances, am unable to have one at present. I like to think I can have one in the future though …

Thank you for posting. Sarah, you are a star for taking on Sally and giving her such a happy and loving home after such a sad start in life. All my family have dogs – me, my parents, brothers and sister and we all treat them family members, even buying each other’s dogs birthday presents and Christmas presents, and looking after each other’s dogs during holidays etc. It beats me how some people can be so cruel and neglect their pets. I watch programmes like Paul O’Grady’s For the Love of Dogs with a box of tissues because I find it upsetting as well as heartwarming when I see the dogs get rehomed. I love reading your Sally updates! Thank you x
