Living a Green Lifestyle at Home
We are all trying to be kinder to the environment and to live more of a green lifestyle. However, sometimes it can feel really hard to do. Especially when some steps offered up to us just aren’t attainable.
However, there are smaller steps you can take and if we all took on a couple of these ideas each, it could really make a big difference overall.
Recently Viessman mapped the greenest citizens across the UK. Their survey of 1000 people found that Bristol came out at the top of the greenest city, with Birmingham coming in at the bottom.
So with that in mind what are some of the small steps we can take?
Source Your Food Locally.

This is a step I’ve been really enjoying taking this year. We locally have a business that delivers (or you can collect) fresh fruit, veg and other produce from the local area.
Personally, this has become my go-to for each week’s fruit and vegetable buying. Alongside homemade jams, local honey and other delicious local treats.
Another way to easily get your hands on locally produced food and drink is to check out a farmers market. These ways not only help you towards a green lifestyle but also support small local businesses.
Turn The Water Temperature Down.
We can all throw our washing in the washer and turn it onto 60 or 40 without thinking. However this year I’ve been washing a lot at 30. Especially when it isn’t that dirty.
These days many cleaners are specifically tested to work well at 30 anyway. So why not try turning the dial down.
It is also worth checking the temperature of the water that comes out of your taps. Do you really need it set so high? Or could turning it down a little work just as well.
Recycle More.

Hands up I can find recycling can be really confusing at times. What is and isn’t accepted? Each council seems to have its own rules when it comes to local pick-up.
However, there are other options. For instance, we’ve locally had a TerraCycle open. So one of my goals for the new year is to work out what from our rubbish they can accept. In addition, consider using materials like an aluminum channel for home projects. Aluminium is highly recyclable and has a lower environmental impact compared to other materials, making it a great choice for those looking to incorporate sustainable practices into their lives.
Switch To Green Cleaning Products.

We all like a clean home, however, it is not good to compromise the environment while doing so. I’ve personally seen a huge increase in “cleaning influencers” using as many products as possible to clean and all I can think is why?!
Not only is it a waste of money, but all those products are likely harming the environment.
As such, try to choose simple green products and don’t use more than you need.
So there you have a few ideas on how to be greener around the home.
I would love to know your top tip when it comes to being more eco-friendly.

Great tips, we are now walking a lot more instead of driving
really trying to use less plastic, reduce our waste and recycle more. We use our local freecycle group on facebook it’s amazing
Freecycle can be such an amazing place to find things can’t it? We’ve managed to give away a few bits as well and it’s nice to know they will go to a new home.
This is so important – I am really trying to do my best to do more!
I continue to make better eco consumer choices and country/company ethics are also important to me. It’s often difficult but I like to think that we’re all moving in the right direction..
Definitely, there is so much to think about at times and it can feel difficult to get yourself in the right place and headspace.
I’m going to start using more eco cleaning products this year
Good luck with using more eco-friendly products – I hope it goes well.
Some great ideas, always try and buy local produce if and when I can, and always looking at what I can recycle.
I think when we all do something little it can help make a big impact.
I definitely need to do more recycling at home
Good luck with doing some more recycling at home!
These are some great tips!!! We have been going greener slowly over the years and it’s so much easier to do so in small steps
Definitely, I think the best way to do is step by step and try and do it slowly. Easier to keep to changes that way.
Great tips! I always think of the 5 R’s and love going to local markets to buy from people that grown or made items.
I love buying from local farmers and tradespeople it is always such a good idea I think.
I love my local market, I have actually been there today and came back with a lovely rosemary and sea salt sourdough and a bag of organic apples grown nearby. At home I do try to recycle as much as I can, and I’m planning on having a compost bin for my garden grass from next summer.
Ohh that sourdough sounds delicious! There is something lovely about visiting a local market isn’t there?
These are very practical tips of green living! thank for sharing
You are welcome I am so glad that it is helpful to people.
We do most of these things in our home. We do our best to be eco-friendly!
That is fantastic, well done on already being so green!
You shared some good ideas here that are sure to help some people live richer, more sustainable lives.
I do hope it helps some people out – it can seem very overwhelming but there are smaller changes you can make.
This post is really informative, it’s so important to live a more green lifestyle.
I am so glad you have found it informative. I hope it helps you out a little.
I love reading these tips. I will turn down the water temp because that is something I don’t do now.
I am so glad I have given you a new idea to do! Good luck!
This is such a great reminder to us to choose simple green products, and use products that don’t hurt the environment much
Definitely there are quite a few little things we can do now!
This is an eye-opener for everyone. We all need to be kinder to the environment and to live more of a green lifestyle.
Definitely, I don’t think we often think about it – or at least I know I don’t think about it enough at times.
Oh my! These are all really great tips! I really need this Thank you so much for sharing this to us!
You are welcome, I am so glad that people have found the tips useful.
Wow! This is really great! I am going to share this also to my friends and my mother!
Thank you so much for sharing on my post, that is really awesome of you!
I am trying to live a better green lifestyle at home, I recently found some great cleaning products where you get a tablet and dilute in water to save buying new products and recycling empty bottles each time
I’ve seen products like that, do they work well? I’ve always been a bit worried I have to admit about how well they would work.
We do try to recycle as much as possible but I would love to shop more locally for our food so that’s a good goal for 2022.
I hope you find some great places to help you shop local in 2022!
Some great tips, we are recycling even more which is good. And I do want to start growing some of my own things, even if I just start with herbs x
Ohh, enjoy growing your own things! It can be so rewarding doing that I think.
Such great tips for living more eco-friendly! We are working on a few of these in our house as well!
Good luck with the things you are working on I really hope it goes well for you.
This is so great. I’m seeing so many other places transitioning into eco-friendly. My daughter’s high school just started composting bins in the cafeteria, and I hear that people actually correctly compost. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, that is awesome what a great idea for a school to be doing, I love that they are getting involved.
I started a garden a couple of years ago. I love all the fresh produce that I get to eat.
We’ve been recycling loads. In fact when I shop I do look out for products in recyclable packaging now as a rule.
That’s good – it definitely helps to pick things in packages you can recycle as long as you know your local councils rules.
These are all great tips! I’ve been trying to be more green myself. Thanks for sharing!
You are welcome, good luck with being more green!
I am working on being more green. We do use reusable bottles and I have been recycling, so it’s a start!
That’s awesome – it sounds you have a great plan of action going on.
We do all these things. I getting more and more green cleaning products in my home. Great suggestions.
Green cleaning products are definitely a favourite of mine it is such an easy switch.
This is an interesting blog. I am pretty good at recycling, as you say every Council is different. I try to buy locally sourced products but in our area we only have one local greengrocer but I use his shop as much as possible
It is so hard to keep on top of it sometimes isn’t it and what people will take for recycling.
