  2. Meal planning is a big one for me. It really surprised me when I worked out how much I was wasting, and that was when it was just myself – now I have a family it’s practically a necessity! I’ve also got a lot better at storing leftovers properly and using things that will be out of date soon.

  3. While I am now 31 … I still love this post and can still utilize it to try and help me save for the future. But I do however have friends who aren’t 30 yet and I am sure they will find this post just as helpful as I think of it to be. We can never be too prepared and this is very informative.

  4. Planning everything including your meal plan helps a lot. No more eating outside, no more tipping, and no more paying high priced wine coz you can buy it cheaper in the supermarket.

  5. Being past 30, I think one of the biggest is really know the difference between a want and a need. Usually wants are fleeting, it sounds good but it goes away. A need like a hot water heater, you cant do without (for long).

  6. I think night’s out are such of money (not that I don’t enjoy them!). If you live in London I have to think about the price of drinks, the price of entry and mostly.. the taxi fare home! It all adds up..

  7. I’ve started cutting my nights out, reducing and I’ve saved quite a lot. I think its also I’ve grown up a little bit and do prefer nights in more these days haha

  8. This is just something that needs to be read by everyone. We have to spread the word. Saving is vital. I think this should be taught in school too. We need to cultivate this to our children as early as possible.

  9. great tips! one idea and concept I always practice is budgeting and saving little by little. as for the nights out! I’m yet to cut back. I am sensible and do budget for them.

  10. I’m 30 next year and I definitely need to start saving more. I’ve started having more nights instead of going out so much, and I really need to start making lunch and prepping meals as that takes a lot of my money. Some really helpful tips here especially the Parking app

  11. Saving is something that I have never been good at – I am a live for the moment sort of gal. However, my husband is a dude and teaching me!

    1. That’s good – Ash is awful for spending money burns money in his pocket when it is his own, but he’s good with other peoples.

    1. It really does make a difference looking after the pennies doesn’t it, you only have to think small to make a difference.

    1. It is amazing how much you can spend on a night out isn’t it, it really makes a difference just even setting a budget.

  16. i’m always looking for ways to save cash, and this list had some really great tips. i especially like the one about not paying for pricey car-parks. i used to pay so much to park in a garage, and was able to save a ton by parking in a surface lot. it is a bit more of a walk, but i just chalk it up to extra exercise every day! 🙂

  18. Im very much past this stage now but its something I wish I had done when I was much younger. Funny how as an older adult i can look back with regret of my silly spending days. I will show this to my 17-year-old. We are trying very hard to instill money values with other children so they can save and invest wisely x

    1. Yeah it is hard to think of what you bought that is still useful or even meaningful sometimes and that’s the worst.

  19. It always pays to save for a rainy day. Starting the saving habit at an early age is important. We need substantial amounts at different events in our life and the savings come to our rescue.

  21. Great tips. I would only add that you can take long walks sipping a soft drink instead of going on a night out or staying home.

    1. That is true, I have to admit thankfully I have never been a fan of nights out to often as I can’t deal with crowds.

  24. In my twenties I was hired by an investment firm. My dad impressed upon me the importance of saving for my future early. Thank goodness he did. You’ve given some great tips here.

  26. These are such great tips, no matter your age. Clipping coupons might make you feel old but it is such a game changer and can really help you build your savings!

  27. Most definitely soup or sandwiches are a great way to save money and not going out for lunch daily if you work and take your own instead.

  28. The best way to save money is to invest in a few Suze Orman books and follow her guidelines.
    Small gestures are smart but staying on the straight and narrow is the hard part. Learning good habits early will pay off in the long run.

  29. I always make a meal plan – I just struggle to stick to it when getting home from work late and feeling exhausted. I’ve started batch cooking on weekends and putting the items in the freezer so as cheat microwave meals for those nights I’m just too tired to cook!

    1. I have to admit I don’t do so well with keeping to a meal plan, my other half makes it really hard as he is forever changing his mind on what he wants to eat haha!

  30. I recall in my 20’s that all my friends and I had just graduated and they were all going out buying new huge TV, DVD players, NICE cars and were all sorts of broke. I bought a very conservative car, NO tv, NO stereo etc. I put away tons of money and paid off my school loans first!!

  31. I have been able to save a lot meal planning. I used to grab takeout at least a few times a week before I started. It really adds up when you do that. Now I plan my meals around what is on sale for that week.

    1. It seems to be a way a lot of people manage to save money, definitely having less takeout can make a huge difference.

  33. These are all tips I’ve done, and still never managed to keep the savings in savings long. There has always been things that come up and wipe it out so quickly. I wished the one thing I would have started doing is investing.

  34. This is definitely something that is extremely important. I wish I knew some of these tips back before I was 30. I think I would’ve had a lot more money now. I do a lot of the stuff now and I am starting to get a nice savings account.

    1. I think the younger you are when you so start the easier it is in the long run as it becomes second nature.

  35. Ugh. My husband and I fail when it comes to EATING OUT —- because we eat out or get TAKE OUT all the friggin’ time!!!!! It actually is starting to drive me a little mad because I just love cooking at home.

    1. I have to admit that is our downfall as well, especially when we both feel unwell which is the time we should be eating better! URGH!

  36. So I’m actually already 30 🙂 but these are good tips. I will admit I spend a lot of money on eating out and traveling, but I also make a lot of meals at home and freeze the extra portions for work lunches, too.

  37. These are such smart tips! I got married young, so in my twenties I tried to save as much as I could. My husband and I rarely went out because we wanted to build up our funds and I made cheap dinners.

  38. When the kids were growing up, I would plan my meals for the week before going grocery shopping. Now that my husband and I are empty nesters, I have fallen out of the habit of meal planning. It does save a lot of money and I need to start meal planning again.

    1. I think it is probably something that is perhaps easier when you have kids at home, with just Ash and I we normally decide on the day which is bad.

    1. Oh gosh it is scary how much it can cost in some places, when we go to Birmingham we end up paying sometimes up to £10 just for a couple of hours.
