How to Improve Your Mental Health: From a Good Night’s Rest to Getting Help
Our understanding of mental health has come a long way.
It’s shocking to think that just a half-century ago, our solution for those we deemed “unstable” was asylums or electroshock therapy. The history of mental health is full of these dramatic moments; it gives you an appreciation to the openness of our society and our sound solutions to its improvement.
Finding balance in your life includes mental well-being.
This article will share the easy changes to the hard decisions for improving your overall mental state.
It Starts with Appreciating Yourself
Learn to appreciate yourself:
- Avoid criticizing your decisions
- Take time to learn new skills
- Accept but also improve physical health
It’s so easy to put ourselves down when we’re in a constant onslaught of mixed messages delivered through the news, social interactions, and our online activities. Learn to disconnect and stop comparing yourself to others – find comfort in your being and continually improve your value.
Improve Your Cognitive Abilities with Better Sleep
Far too many champion the idea of “tiredness” as if it’s a badge of courage. Almost like they’re better than others because they’re overworked and under-rested.
Do they realize a good night’s sleep will improve:
- Creativity
- Mental performance
- Memory
- Alertness
Imagine what one can accomplish with these four improvements running on all cylinders.
Sleep is improved by unwinding and setting the right environment. It includes keeping a schedule and sleeping on a mattress that’s appropriate to your body’s comfort levels. TheBeddingMart.com offers extra sleep tips for a better night’s rest if this is a mental health improvement you’d like to explore.
Spend Time doing Something Creative
Music has many mental health benefits such as providing a boost to motivation and reducing stress. Try listening for the sake of listening. Turn on your favourite tunes without any distractions, laying in bed, and let the music take you on a journey.
Art is another creative outlet to improve mental health:
- Paint a pleasant picture
- Sing a favourite song
- Play an instrument
- Write a neat story
It doesn’t matter if you’re good. You should enjoy the experience and how it lets your mind release its troubles. You may find these outlets a way to branch out and explore new life adventures, too! This excitement found in new adventures is sure to improve your mood.
Eliminate Vice from Your Life
There’s no positive timeline if you find yourself becoming addicted (or already are addicted) to drugs and alcohol. You either find yourself in legal troubles or do irreversible damage to your body. And yes, before you say it…even marijuana isn’t the wonder drug we’d all like to believe.
- If you’re on hard stuff: Find help and quit
- If you’re on soft stuff: Quit or at least moderate
You can enjoy a glass of beer or wine here and there.
But:
The problem is when this becomes part of your persona. It’s when you start experiencing physical withdrawals or cognitive dissonance. When you can’t enjoy an activity without partaking in your vice first.
Removing the vices will “un-fog” your mind and give you the motivation to improve yourself. How you choose to make those improvements is up to you… but it is easier without vices weighing you down.
Identify What is Causing You Stress
You can also improve your mental health by looking at what is causing your stress. The reasons for increased stress levels can often surprise you, and although you might think it’s one thing, there’s a significant chance that it could be something else.
However, several issues are more common than others. Your bills and finances are one, whereas family health can be another. If you can identify your stress triggers, you can start taking steps to overcome them. To lessen the blow for your monthly bills, Energy Supplier reviews can give you a clear idea of the best rates. In terms of family health, regular checkups and staying in touch can dampen the stress and ensure everyone feels their best wherever they are.
Other anti-stress solutions include:
- Meditation and mindfulness
- Exercise
There is no one-stop solution that works for everybody, but there are enough options out there that can help you ease your stress and hopefully improve your mental health.
Get Help
Our better understanding of mental health has created a positive network of:
- Psychologists
- Holistic practices
- Support groups
Use the National Alliance on Mental Illness to find support if other outlets and options have failed. You could also check out “couples rehab near me” to help your partner know how to support you during this time as well.
