How Horses can Help Dealing with Mental Health

You might think that the horse does all the work, but you need to stay balanced and keep him under control all the time. 15 minutes of jumping can burn off 140 calories, while just taking him out for a gentle trot is still good for your body.
Owning a horse leads to an active lifestyle and you will find that staying in shape has never been as enjoyable as it is when you going out riding. There will no longer be any excuse to just stay in and have a lazy day.
Compete in Events and Enjoy Social Meetings
Horses also open up an exciting new world of opportunities. You might want to take part in competitive events, or you may just prefer to take the chance to go along to some social events.
They are extremely sociable animals, so taking your horse along to an event is also a great way of getting him to interact with others. Even just going out for a ride with a friend can be a wonderful shared experience.
You don’t need to enter him into the races at Ascot or subscribe into the Twinspires.com Kentucky Derby odds to take part in competitive events. Just get started by looking to see what local competitions appear to be suitable for beginners and then take it from there.

Lower Your Stress Levels
The link between lower stress levels and spending time with horses has received a lot of attention in recent times. A study carried out by Washington State University focused on young people, and they discovered a clear link between spending time with horses and lower stress hormone production.
Equine therapy lets patients groom and feed horses. It is a type of treatment that has been used to help people with a range of conditions, from cerebral palsy to dementia and depression. Some researchers also suggest that it can be used to treat autism.
Having said that, anyone of any age can remove some of the anxiety from their life by doing this. Simply heading out to the stable to groom a horse and talk to him is a great way of dealing with the stresses and strains of modern life.
Discover New Skills and Increase Your Confidence
Learning any new skill is likely to boost your confidence. We all love to test ourselves and find that we are capable of doing what is asked of us. The idea of having a horse to care for can seem extremely daunting at first.
If you start to care for a horse then you will need to learn a range of new skills. As well as riding him, you will need to learn how to groom and feed him, for example. Doing it yourself is a lot more satisfying than paying someone to look after your horse.
The good news is that these are all things that anyone can learn. With time and patience, you will find that you are capable of looking after your horse and enjoying the time that you spend with him. In fact, these will probably be your happiest hours of each week.

Thank you for this information, I struggle with bipolar and Generalised anxiety disorder. I’ve always been scared of horses but I’m considering a volunteer position at a local horse rescue for these reasons.
There’s a group I follow on Facebook who are pretty much opening their doors for people with mental health to come and do all sorts with the horses, riding, mucking out, just being around them and I so wish I lived nearer as it’s such an incredible programme.
