Getting a Personal Loan with Poor Credit – is it Possible?
When it comes to applying for a personal loan, you need to be aware that creditors will not show mercy after diving into your credit history. They will analyse every aspect of your current status and financial habits in order to assess the level of risk and determine if they should lend you the much-needed money. Some lenders choose to turn their back to borrowers with poor or no credit. You do not have to panic if you do not have excellent credit, but you should know that it will make the process more difficult. Unless you convince banks or credit unions that you are able to repay the amount borrowed, you will not receive the personal loan. These lenders have strict requirements and standards, not to mention their interest in credit scores when selecting the borrowers. They can instantly realize that you have a bad credit score if they notice late payments, overdrawn checking account and not receiving a contract from cell companies.
Visit credit unions and consider asking family and friends for a loan
However, the question still remains: how can you get a loan for bad credit? Well, first you have to direct your attention towards credit unions. Choosing the right lender is the smartest move in your situation, but you may ask why credit unions. Even though they provide the same services as commercial banks, they do not seek profit desperately because they represent non-profit institutions. A community-based credit union might consider poor credit a detail and give you the personal loan after evaluating yourself as a person and analyzing your character. Some people even resort to their families and friends for money. However, if you do not have the certainty that you can repay the loan, you should avoid making this decision because it will ruin your solid relationship built in all these years. On the other hand, if your relatives and friends are supportive and understanding, they might become the best sources of money. Just because you received the money from someone you know, it does not mean that you should not treat the loan with seriousness.
Convince someone to become your co-signer and make timely payments
Credit unions and relatives do not represent the only viable options for getting a loan with poor credit. You can also find someone with good or even excellent credit and persuade him or her to become your co-signer. Of course, if the respective person agrees, she has to take equal responsibility for the repayment, especially taking into account that the lender used her credit score to set the loan terms. You have to be fully aware that if you repay the loan too late, the co-signer will suffer the most because it will affect his or her credit score. On the other hand, if you do not exceed the time allocated for the repayment, you might earn lenders’ trust and receive personal loans in the future without having to convince someone to become your co-signer. Fortunately, you have plenty of other options including peer-to-peer lending, secure loans or home equity loan.

Interesting post for those that it affects. Fortunately not a worry I have just now!
Fortunately, we have great credit, however if we didn’t I know that we have family willing to help us if something ever happened. Great tips for someone who doesn’t have great credit.
Wow. I appreciate all the advice. I know that having bad credit can affect so many areas of your life.
This is informative. I like that you don’t sugarcoat this. It is true that it is in general harder.
Very informative post. I am fortunate that we do not have poor credit, but we also choose not to take out loans. If we want something we save for it, and if disaster strikes we are VERY lucky to have supportive parents who are always ready to lend us what we need.
This is definitely not an easy subject, but nevertheless very interesting. Thanks for sharing the info with us!
Very interesting tips. Have not found myself in the situation yet. Generally speaking I would not ask for a loan if I am not sure I will be able to pay it back.
This is a good article with useful information! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Very informative. As a friend I never lend a friend money that I can’t afford to give them. Such is life, i’m a giver. Good article.
