Creative Ways to Use Baker Racks

Baker racks are all the fashion in today’s interior design, and they aren’t just for the kitchen. Because some of these pieces are beautifully ornate or close replicas of antiques, they make a great display piece for anywhere in the home. If you have found a baker’s rack that you love but you don’t have room in your kitchen, consider these alternative baker racks ideas throughout your home.

Stylish kitchen storage outside the kitchen

Having enough storage in the kitchen seems like a constant battle, especially to someone who loves to cook or bake. If your kitchen is full to bursting and you just need some additional storage for baking pans or canned goods, consider if you have space for another shelf just outside the kitchen. It might be a wide hallway or an attached dining room, but a bakers rack gives you stylish storage as an extension of your kitchen.

Guest bedroom or attached hallway

What better place to store extra linens, toiletries, and other necessities than in the guest bedroom? If you have a hallway that is at least 36” wide, you should be able to place a bakers rack against the wall just outside the guest room, or between bedrooms. The bakers racks are stylish and work well with almost any décor.

Unconventional bathroom storage

Are you always running out of room for towels and toiletries? A bakers rack can even be used as bathroom storage. Even though they are about 36” wide, they are not very deep, making them a good option for behind doors and tucked in corners where other furniture doesn’t make sense. Use it for towels and other bathroom linens, and add some functionality with stylish bins matching the surrounding décor for each member of the household, as well as one or two guests.

Entryway organisation, décor, and convenience

In an entryway, a bakers rack becomes a truly multifunctional piece of furniture. Assign shelves or use cubbies to allow everyone a place to keep their things as they come and go. Get some vintage mail trays or faux leather file trays for sorting mail among the household. You could also have a designated spot for outgoing mail, shopping lists, and other items that all household members may need on a day to day basis.

To make this space even more functional, locate a vintage umbrella stand and coat rack for either side of the bakers rack, then create a message centre with a dry erase board, dry erase markers and eraser, and either a magnetic board and magnets or a cork board with push pins.

Mobile gardening

If you have herbs or other plants that you maintain year-round, a bakers rack could be the perfect solution to move your plants in and out as needed. When the weather turns colder, you have to bring certain plants and herbs indoors. Of course, real sunlight is by far more beneficial for your herbs, and if you have a nice day it can be a good idea to move them back outdoors for an afternoon. Unfortunately, that is rarely practical.

But by adding casters to a baker’s rack, you could make a mobile garden. The varied racks of the baker’s rack will be perfect for holding your potted herbs, and the counter-like surface is perfect for harvesting, drying, pruning, etc. You could even hang herbs to dry from the top of the baker’s rack.
