Motoring Memories
I was quite late learning to drive, it wasn’t until I was 24 that I finally took my test and passed and it was during the time I was learning to drive, I caught swine flu which lead to my decline and onset of Fibromyalgia on top of my pre-existing conditions. So I never got to take the day trips I had long planned, when I first started to learn.
I had always dreamt of packing up for the day and going to the beach with Sally dog or popping to visit historical sites. All those places that take an hour or two to reach in the car, but would take forever by bus or rail.
Of course though driving hasn’t been quite as I originally planned; it has definitely meant I am able to get out more than I would without having a license. However, there have been the occasions when Ash and I have gone away for a time and I have fantastic memories of those days.
Personally my favourite memories include visiting Ox Pasture Hall in Scarborough. We’ve actually been back since we first went, the second time for Ash’s birthday, last October and spent a few nights there and got to explore more of the area. It is perhaps one of my favourite places I’ve discovered since driving, that I hadn’t been to before.
Of course driving allows you to visit favourite old spots as well and I was able to take Ash to York, allowing me to show him some of my favourite places I had found as a child.
While I am lucky enough to have access to my own car, that isn’t always possible, but affordable care hire from places like Auto Europe can allow those who have a license, to take off for a day or week and drive to where ever they fancy. Opening up a whole new world of adventure.

24 is not really late to learn to drive, I am 28 going on 29 and I am yet to do my test but hoping to do it before my birthday in July. I think having a car of your own or licence to be able to lease a car is the best way forward.
We love driving to the lake district as the scenery is breath taking.
I remember learning to drive a manual transmission at the age of 15. I stalled out in the middle of a really busy street with cars approaching, and my parents stayed calm and said, “well, you have to figure out what to do next.” hahaha I was a nervous wreck!
Hahah I hate stalling, my test I actually passed I stalled at a roundabout, but as I didn’t panic and restarted I didn’t get a mark, however I was SURE I had failed because of it – so I calmed down for the rest of the test thinking it was all over anyway and passed with flying colours! LOL
I love long car trips, always have done. I didn’t get my licence til I was 24, but I can’t imagine not being able to drive now
I was in a huge hurry to get my license and haven’t stopped driving since! I can’t imagine life without my car.
It is strange isn’t it – it really opened up a whole new world once you have wheels. x
That is so awesome! I actually got my license when I was pregnant around 19 years old. I don’t have a car of my own, but I do love driving.
I don’t drive so I can’t say I have any good ‘motoring memories’, but I enjoyed reading yours!

I can’t imagine not having my own car! I always like packing up and doing long road trips!!
I literally couldn’t live without my car, it’s done 93000 miles now which shows just how much we use it to travel all over!

I wish I did my driving lesson when I was 18. But I am only just taking them now and I am 31. Hopefully I will have my own car by the end of the year

I love having a car and being able to go when I need to. Such freedom. I know others that choose not to drive though.
I feel like I am always driving – either for work or to visit family. I love road trips and going on spontaneous adventures in the car.
I could not imagine not driving! I passed my test when I was 17 and it’s something that I could not live without BUT I live in the countryside where a 20 minute trip in the car can take 2 hours on the bus!
Some of my favorite memories are road trips without destinations or ones where we took a detour to try something new. I love the excitement that a road trip can bring!
My driving lessons were my 17th birthday present from my parents (my 18th went by relatively unmarked!), best gift ever, the freedom it gives is fantastic, I just can’t believe I’ve had a full licence for over 27 years now!
I love being able to drive – it brings so much freedom. My favourite is going on road trips with my husband, and singing along loudly to a CD 🙂
We often hire a car, as we don’t have our own living in the city and i’s nice to get out of the city for the day.
Gosh, I remember the swine flu! I caught it and I was so unwell. I don’t know how to drive and have never felt the need to due to the fact I live so central that public transport is easier and it costs so much just to park on my road I don’t think it would be too cost effective xx
Wow you caught the swine flu. I remember on the nhs swine flu line when it all started.
I didn’t get my license until my mid-thirties! Really kicking myself that I left it so long, but I’m really enjoying driving now. Love it, in fact. My favourite motoring memory? A road trip with the family from Shetland to the Lake District via The Cairngorms. Perfection. 🙂
Having a car is so convenient, i couldn’t imagine not having my own! But people all over the world manage with out and use transit systems.
I absolutely love the freedom that driving gives me although I actually don’t enjoy driving lol xxx
I can get so stressed sometimes, especially on the motorway I have to admit lol. x
We enjoy traveling by car or just doing road trips close to home. I always loved it. Even we travel internationally, we rent cars. 🙂

I was without my car for about a year and it completely took away my independence, I wouldn’t be without a car now!
It is amazing the difference having a car makes isn’t it. x
I learnt to drive quite late but I’m glad I did as I have friends that left it and are now truggling to fit it in with their busy lives.
It’s hard isn’t it – I wouldn’t have been ready in my teens (I was denied a license anyway due to my meds back then) but I am so glad I did it in the end. x
Being able to get out and go where you please is really nice. I love being able to head to the coast at any time!
That’s one thing I wish I could do more, I would love to live nearer the coast. x
There is nothing better than just packing up and heading out. I always like the trips we used to take when we had no real destination in mind.
I used to do that sort of thing on the train in my younger days I would just go to a station and pick one of the next trains to be leaving. x
I don’t drive but my partner does and i love to just pack things up and go out for the day or the weekend! It’s lovely.
Growing up road trips were a huge part of my childhood. So much so I wanted to share those classic moments with my kids.
I remember going to my grandmothers and being so excited to see my Aunts, Uncles and cousins who also came to town.
I think my longest trips have all been to see family – something extra exciting about seeing those family members you haven’t seen in a while.
I learned to drive as soon as possible, but I didn’t travel much until I got married. We have taken some great road trips over the years.
It’s hard to tell if I love car trips. I would if I didn’t feel so stressed.
However I did love visiting Alaska. We drove there from LA. It was quite the amazing.
I’m glad you have such good memories and get to visit some of your favorite places.
Think some of my favorite road trips are you there with my parents or with my friends in college. We had so much fun exploring! We would just stop along the side of the road if there is something that we wanted to see. Something that you can do when you’re fine.
My favorite motoring memory is my first date with my husband. I knew we were going to be a perfect match 10 minutes into our drive.

That is so interesting to me. I have been driving since sixteen and am teaching my 15 year old daughter right now. We have to drive just to get groceries or go to school though. 15 miles from town.

I haven’t passed my driving test so my favourite memory would have to be failing my test for hitting a pothole!!

Ive never wanted to drive. I had lessons and even went as far as my test, but it just isnt for me x
My Mums the same she has a driving license but she has never driven as long as I have been alive. x
I was quite lucky and passed my test when I was 18 so I’ve had loads of time for road trips and things. I think one of my best memories is probably driving to Glastonbury back in 2010 as it was such an experience x
I do wish I had passed younger in some ways I would have managed to do more like that but I don’t know if I would have handled it in the right way on the other hand.
I can’t imagine not having my own car and being able to come and go as I please. Glad there are services to help people who don’t have access to a car.
I couldn’t either any more, sometimes I wonder how I managed before.
I really LOVE packing up my clothes and getting in the car to travel… Getting away from boring Ohio always excites me. The beach and palm trees makes me so happy. I need that back in my life. Florida or Myrtle Beach, here I come!!
