How to care for your luxury mirrors
The pleasure of purchasing beautiful designer mirrors can be even more exciting than buying new shoes or exquisite jewellery.
That’s because luxury mirrors are like works of art. Just look at some of the gorgeous mirrors on online furniture store The Longest Stay and you’ll understand immediately. They adorn your walls like a painting, and yet are so much more versatile—they can make small spaces look larger, play with the light and be functional, too.
Because designer mirrors are likely to be the centrepiece in a particular space, it’s important to learn how to care for yours to keep them as bright as day.
Here are some tips for the care of luxury mirrors.
Use the right materials to get rid of streaks
We’ve all seen those annoying spots and streaks on the bathroom mirror. From time to time, expect to see some spots on your designer mirrors, too, no matter where in the house they’re hanging.
Never, ever try to get rid of spots on your luxury mirrors by using the infamous finger and spit method, and please, please stay away from paper towels!
Instead, you want to use a very gentle microfiber cloth, the kind that you use to clean eyeglasses or computer screens.
Next, you want to get hold of some rubbing alcohol and glass cleaner. First apply the rubbing alcohol to get rid of stubborn stains. A spritz of glass cleaner will finish the job nicely.
When working on removing stains, always be patient, work slowly and stop if you realise you are producing scratches. A stray grain of sand can wreak havoc on your mirror.
Treat scratches the moment you notice them
There is nothing more painful than discovering a scratch, however small, on your gorgeous designer mirrors.
Don’t spend months trying to ignore the scratch before caving in and doing something about it.
Scratches get more difficult to remove with time, which means that you need to act quickly.
If the scratch is very minor, you might be able to get away with using toothpaste or white vinegar and mustard.
Deeper scratches are best removed with the help of a professional. While you will find many DIY solutions on the internet, it’s better not to take the risk when a designer mirror is involved. You do not want to have to throw out your beloved mirror if you make a mistake!
Clean your mirrors regularly
When you ignore your mirrors for months on end, don’t be surprised if you find blemishes.
Mirrors need to be cleaned regularly to keep them shining, even those that hang in living rooms or bedrooms, far from taps and toothbrushes.
We recommend that you give your mirror a good cleaning with glass cleaner and microfiber cloth at least once a week. Dust can also collect on frames and edges, so run a feather duster over your mirror every now and then, too.
Your mirror might come with different care instructions depending on the materials used to create the frame. Always ask the store where you purchased the mirror for advice on how to care for it so that it lasts a lifetime.
