All You Need To Know About Diamonds
A quality diamond is one of the most precious and stunning things you will ever lay your eyes on.
The way the light reflects off the surface to create a beautiful sparkle is simply magical.
No wonder they are considered so desirable.
However, many unfortunate people have experienced the incident whereby they have accidentally purchased a poor quality diamond.

This is usually down to the fact that they are simply uneducated when it comes to buying diamond jewellery.
A lot of people don’t even realise that there are different levels of quality sold.
Thus, if you are going to buy a diamond ring, diamond piece jewellery for your piercings, or any other type of diamond jewellery, this blog post is for you.
When you buy diamonds you should be looking for those that are GIA certified. GIA stands for Gemological Institute of America.
This is the world’s biggest and most well-known non-profit institute of gemological education and research.
They employee over 900 employees compromising of diamond graders, educators and scientists.
Their diamond grading system is the one that is most commonly used by quality jewellers all over the world. It grades a diamond based on four qualities; cut, colour, clarity and carat.

Let’s look at these in further detail…
- Cut – The cut is not to be confused with the shape of the diamond jewellery (such as round, princess, marquise and alike). Rather, the cut deals with the actual proportions of the diamond. If the cut is too deep or too shallow then light will spill out. This is detrimental when it comes to the stunning sparkle we were talking about earlier.
- Colour – A diamond is ranked on a scale of D to Z based on colour. D is considered to be the highest quality whereas Z is the least desirable. Let’s look at this in more depth…
o D to F – Colourless
o G to J – Near colourless
o K to M – Faint yellow
o N to R – Very light yellow
o S to Z – Light yellow

- Clarity – Clarity relates to how many flaws the diamond has. This is as follows…
o FI – Flawless
o IF – Internally flawless
o VVS – Very, very small inclusions
o VS – Very small inclusions
o SI – Small inclusions
o I – Imperfect
- Carat – The weight of the diamond is measured in carats. One carat is spilt into 100 points. Thus, a diamond of 50 points would weight 0.50 carats.
Furthermore, when buying diamond rings you need to make sure you go for a quality metal to complement the diamond.
The most traditional options are gold or platinum.
Platinum is stunning and boasts high durability.
However, yellow gold is the cheaper option, although you wouldn’t think it because it is just as beautiful.
Think about the colour of the jewellery you typically wear and match it to this.
