2023 – The Year of the Armchair
AD
There is nothing quite like a good place to sit. After all, having a chair that doesn’t support you can leave you aching and painful, something no one wants.
We all have personal preferences on what we like regarding our own armchairs. Some of us want to relax and recline, while others like a more supported approach.
Interestingly the past few years show that armchairs are coming back into fashion.
What the Stats Say

Since 2019 there has been a year-on-year rise in searches for armchairs. These searches are for leather, cuddle, wingback, recliner or other chairs.
However, the recliner chair has shown itself to be the most popular choice when bought and has seen a 55% rise in searches.
Yet interestingly, accent chairs are seeing the biggest search increase, with a 149.07% increase seen between 2019 and 2021.
On the flip side, searches of occasional, swivel, club and fabric chairs have all declined.
What I Look For In an Armchair

Personally, in our home, we have a snuggle armchair. A snuggle chair is a chair that is a little bigger than a normal armchair yet smaller than a sofa. It can fit two people, but they will have to sit close together.
A snuggle chair gives you plenty of room to put your feet up, curl up or snuggle down when the colder weather hits.
They may not be for everyone as they do take up more room, and I realise for many people, armchairs are all about having a closer fit in a smaller space. However, if you want a chair that gives you room to relax in whatever fashion you wish (I cannot sit properly – I blame my hypermobility. I always have my feet up or sit cross-legged), then it could be the perfect armchair for you too!
It also fits well into the corner of the room we had free for an armchair to fit it, offering a good TV view and space to put your feet up. We have styled it with a blanket over the back for those colder days and a couple of cushions for maximum comfort.
Honestly, it really makes for a cosy corner, no matter if you are spending some time reading or playing a video game which is probably why Ash has claimed it as his own.
Overall Thoughts

There is nothing quite like having your own space and area, so to me, it’s no surprise that armchairs are becoming more loved.
You can use an armchair to bring in colour and make a focal point in the room, adding to the uptick in searches. Recliners will always have their place within the home. After all, who doesn’t love putting their feet up at the end of a long day?
As such, if you are looking to fill a space or buy new seating for your home, looking at armchairs is a good idea. You never know, you might just find your go-to chair is something you hadn’t thought of trying out before.
Do you have a favourite armchair?

I do love an armchair, they are so cosy!
My favourite armchair is my riser/recliner, I wouldn’t be without it.
The pink armchair in the second photo is very handsome
We dont have a chair but my other half is desperate to get one, we just dont have the room as our sofa takes up the space unfortunately but I would love an armchair too.
I hope if you decide to go for an armchair one day you manage to get hold of a really comfortable one for yourself.
Love this! armchair are underrated. There’s something about having an armchair with the one comfy cushion and soft snuggly throw over the arm that just makes me want to make a hot chocolate…
Ohh you are so right – hot chocolate was made for being drunk while sat in an armchair I think!
I like to lounge ON people so an armchair isn’t really for me.
We actually only own 2 sofas so no armchairs in our house i must admit I love to relax so I’m not a fan
Not even a recliner? They can be very relaxing to sit back in.
I can see why 2022 is the year of the armchair! Such an important item of furniture in the home. I spend a lot of time in mine – but not quite as much as my cats!
It sounds like your cats have found the perfect place to sit and relax!
I have a recliner chair and I love it as it it’s great to put your feet up at the end of the day!
Sometimes you just have to get your feet up don’t you! Nothing like a relax.
Since being afflicted with arthritis I have come to realise there are some chairs that are comfortable and some that definitely are not. It is not always easy to tell from looking at a chair whether it will be comfy or not but I do think a good design and manufacture by craftsmen does help which unfortantely sometimes means that a comfortable may cost more.
There really is such a choice with chairs and you really need to think and try before you buy as you don’t want to get it wrong.
I particularly like recliner armchairs. Though that grey one is lovely.
There is nothing quite like the way you can relax in a recliner is there?
I would love a recliner armchair. Sometimes I just want to sit on my own without my Children’s legs flailing all over me although I can imagine if I had an armchair they would still climb over me lol
Oh no! It might be a little harder for them though if you were in an armchair perhaps!
I’ve always wanted a snuggle chair but we have such a massive sofa and such a small living room that we have no room for one!
I do love a wingback too, I always think they look lovely in a bedroom.
That’s the trouble isn’t it, it always comes down to space. We have a small sofa and a chair as that’s all we could fit.
I have a settee with a recliner, when I can put my feet up, great for watching sport and films
It is so comfortable, isn’t it? Ash’s parents have a sofa recliner and I always pop my feet up when we are there.
I absolutely love a snuggly armchair, great for an afternoon tea break or watching films!
Ohh so true, there’s nothing like making sure your really comfortable and cosy when enjoying some down time.
I was lucky enough to win a gorgeous designer snuggler chair from Barker & Stonehouse, it is purple with Orla Kiely design seat cushions, my pride and joy!
Ohh that sounds absolutely incredible – what a win to have got!
I, too, love my snuggle armchair, although I don’t often share it, it is more for curling up in and reading a good book or watching television
Definitely nothing wrong with that – gives you that room to snuggle down and stretch out a little too!
It is such a personal choice, I like a nice softish recliner.
Definitely – I think everyone likes to choose something different when it comes to a chair.
I rarely get to sit on our armchair but I’m happy with the sofa – feet down or up.
That is true – you get the choice when it comes to a sofa! I have the sofa as I used to share it with Sal, just a small two-seater.
I love my bright yellow armchair from Ikea. I can understand why more people have been showing interest in them. They are so comfy and can also be a statement piece for the home. Plus with more people working at home they would want something more comfy. If I had the room I would want a snuggle armchair. I’ll probably end up napping in it.
Ohh that sounds lovely and snuggly and I love the colour as well! Bright yellow so awesome!
