  1. Very sensible reminders. I have dropped the thermostat and am actively dealing with draughts. Will also be ordering some additional insulation.

  2. If you have a loft that you access via a drop-down ladder and trapdoor, make sure you keepthe trapdoor firmly shut. Warm air rises and if you don’t, all your lovely hot air will rush out through the loft and roof. Conversely, in the summer, keep the trapdoor wide open. It will help keep the ground floor of your home nice and cool.

    1. There is nothing like a good hot water bottle at times is there – I love to be cosy and warm with one.

  6. These are all wonderful tips. One of my favorites is to bake goodies because the oven can keep the house warm too. This always helps us, plus we love to bake as a family.

    1. That is so true – it is amazing the difference just having something on in the oven can make to a room isn’t it?

  7. I am using an app to control my heaters via smart plugs. I don’t keep the heating on all the time as that would end up costing an arm and a leg. With the app I can turn it on half an hour before I come home, and also I can set it on a timer. This method saved me so much money last year.

    1. That is such a good idea, we have HIVE heating and it really does make a difference I’ve found I have to admit.

    1. They are such a great idea as it means you can control the temperature of each room after all they should all be sightly different.

  10. We need new windows. The drafts in our house are terrible during the winter. We can’t afford windows right now so I’ll be layering up!

  13. We will be adding more insulation into the attic to help with this. My husband already put in some more plywood to have storage room.

  15. I need to get my husband to reset the heating. I’ve been freezing after the school run and it’s not been fun. it takes a while for it to kick in and heat up. I’ve started not opening curtains to keep in heat which makes a difference.

  16. I always have our heat set to 72! I’ll keep your other tips in mind. I’m in Texas so it doesn’t get too cold, but last year we got snow which is rare for here. So it was a bit chaotic.

    1. I remember reading about the snow in Texus! It seemed to cause some real issues, fingers crossed your winter isn’t so bad this year.
