Tips For Your Smear Test
As women, we all know how important it is to go for our smear tests. We also know how daunting the thought of it is, especially when it’s your first time. However, the importance of the test should always overshadow the worry we feel beforehand.
We have gathered together a list of tips that could help you when going for your smear tests. Some of the tips you may feel won’t work for you, however, it’s all about making yourself feel as comfortable as possible.
To book your appointment, get in touch with your GP and find a time to suit you. If you are not registered to a GP, or you would like a more comfortable service and to avoid the sometimes long NHS wait times. There are a number of gynaecologists in Manchester and surrounding areas who can help you out.

Talk to your nurse or doctor.
It is completely normal to feel nervous and apprehensive before your smear test. If this is the case, it is important to speak to your nurse or doctor as you have to remember that they do this every single day and they will be able to put you at ease.
They may also be able to go through the reasons why you are having your test and what results it can show, this could then help you to understand why you are having the test and ease your mind a little more.
Ask for the first appointment of the day.
Another good tip is to ask for the first appointment of the day, this can help to ease your worries. If you book the test for later in the day, this could lead to having to spend longer in the waiting room, due to wait times (which we all know, can be very daunting places). It also means you are waiting around in the day to go to the doctor which then can cause you to build it up in your head and could lead to unnecessary worrying.
Ask for a nurse or doctor of a particular gender.
It is completely normal to be worried about getting a male doctor carrying out your smear test and asking for a female is completely understandable. If it helps you to feel more comfortable and puts you at ease it is worth it!
After all, a female nurse/ doctor knows exactly how you feel and can help explain the process in more detail as they have been through it too.
Take someone you trust with you.
It may make your worries lessen if you can take someone with you to your appointment, obviously during current times it may not be possible for someone to come into the room due to restrictions however you may take some comfort in taking someone travelling with you to ease your mind before you go into your appointment.
Overall, your smear test is an experience most people don’t want to undertake, however, it is extremely important for your health, so the good definitely outweighs the bad. Hopefully, some of these tips can guide you when going for your smear test, because remember it’s better to be safe!
