7 Simple Steps to a Cosier Home
As snow hits the UK and temperatures drop once again, it can become increasingly difficult to get warm. One of the worst places to feel cold is at home. You want to be comfy, cosy and feel the warmth by shutting out the sub-zero temperatures. If you’re looking to make your home warmer and cosier, here are seven tips you can implement almost immediately.
1. Lay a rug
A comfortable rug can make a world of difference in a cold room. Wood flooring may be fashionable at the moment, but it can be cold on your feet if you aren’t lucky enough to have underfloor heating. By laying a thick decorative rug you can add to your home’s overall style, whilst making it much cosier and giving an extra boost of warmth.
2. Blankets
Laying lots of warm blankets around your home means there’s always something to curl up in if you get a little chilly. Thick, knitted blankets are a fashionable (not to mention ridiculously comfy) accessory this year. Or you can use luxurious fur blankets that make a cold leather sofa so much more inviting. When they’re not in use you can choose to put your extra blankets away, or leave them out and allow them to become part of your décor.
3. Use warm colours
This is less about physical warmth and more about the feeling of cosiness within your home. Although with that being said, your eyes can trick your brain if it sees warmer colours. This can be from the colour of your blankets and cushions to the paint used on your walls.
4. Light candles
Ideal for both warmth and instant cosiness, candles are multi-purpose and the positive effect they can have on your home is not to be underestimated. Their soft glow set a relaxing mood, and you can choose your favourite scent to make any room even more enticing.
5. Scatter cushions
Who doesn’t love a comfy cushion to rest their head on? Whether on the sofa or the bed, a good cushion makes any space more inviting. By using a multitude of different shapes and sizes, you can use them for different activities such as reading, sleeping or propping your head up to watch TV.
6. Lighting
Rather than using bright, fluorescent overhead lighting, floor and table lamps are a more effective way of making a room feel cosier. If your lamps have a dimmer, you can set the lighting to whatever suits you and gives you total control. You can also swap out cool-tones bulbs for something a little warmer, which makes an instant difference.
7. Block draughts
Draughts are everyone’s worst enemy when it comes to getting warm at home. It’s scary to think about the amount of times the words ‘close that door’ have been uttered in most family homes! Using draught excluder cushions come in a variety of looks, so you don’t have to sacrifice style either.
We all dream of a warm house to come home to, especially through the winter months when there’s often little escape from the cold weather. These are some easy steps to make the most of warmth in your home, but there’s aplenty more you can do if you’re determined to create the perfect cosy retreat.

Some great tips, but I wonder whether snuggling up and hunkering down makes S.A.D. more likely?. Maybe getting out in whatever daylight there is however cold it may be pays benefits too.
It sounds absurd. but I unfortunately live in a very modern home – albeit dreaming of an old cottage somewhere in the Welsh mountains. To get the warm psychological feeling of an open fire- we have a DVD that shows an open fire on the television. so occasionally we give up TV and drink hot chocolate in our PJs in front of a very realistic virtual open fire. it is amazingly therapeutic!!!
I hink the only thing we don’t have on your list is scatter pillows on the floor. I would also have to say add pets 🙂 I guess the cats and dog are our scatter pillows and make things nice and cozy!
great tips, it’s been a cold one, and candles for me make a room feel and look so cosy
Candles and pillows for me, plus scents for a relaxing mood. But I dont over do it when my Amore is around, because he easily fall asleep.
I agree with all of the tips except the lighting. I like nice bright rooms – like as bright as sunlight!
I love warm colored lights. The white ones really just take everything to a serious note more so than cozy.
Rugs really do make a huge difference. Candles are always a great idea too.
Great ideas!! I love having a lot of blankets and pillows on the couches and candles are great also!
we love our pillows and blankets in the family room.. When we are relaxing we want to be comfortable and that at times means cuddling in a blanket with your favorite pillow
We have many blankets in the family room. If you are relaxing then use a blanket.
