7 Key Tips to Improve Your Workout Routine Long-Term
When you first start working out, it’ll be because you want to see a noticeable difference in how you look and feel. While you could’ve noticed a difference already, it doesn’t mean you would’ve seen all of the results you wanted. You might need to improve your workout routine because of that.
You could want this for more than a few reasons, ranging from losing weight to putting on more muscle. But, figuring out what to do can be tricky.
It doesn’t need to be. With the right workout tips, it could be more straightforward than you would’ve thought. It could just be a matter of making a few adjustments, and you’ll see better and better results in time.
Seven specific tips could be more than worth it.
1. Eat Some Carbs Before Working Out

The prep work before your workout can often be the most important area to focus on. It helps make sure you have the fuel you need to push yourself harder and harder. This could then tie directly into the kind of results your workouts lead to. Carb-loading can be one of the better areas to focus on.
This is especially true when you’re focusing on high-intensity interval training and similar workouts. Carbs give you the energy you need to keep going during these workouts, letting you exercise for longer.
2. Invest in Your Gear & Essentials
You’ll already know you’ll have to get some workout gear, so you’re as comfortable as possible while minimising the risk of an injury. But, that doesn’t mean just picking out a few of the basics and leaving it at that. It’s always worth making sure you get the best workout gear possible for your budget.
Sports tops, sports bras, appropriate shoes, shorts or leggings, and similar options will all be relatively obvious. But, that doesn’t mean these will be everything you should pick up.
There could be more than a few other essentials, and a few optional extras, too. The likes of nasal strips and similar overlooked investments could be more than worth it, depending on your needs. If they help with your workout, they’re more than worth getting.
3. Do Intervals
High-intensity intervals can often be a great way to improve your workouts, as long as you’re taking the right approach. These are periods of all-out effort for a minute or two, followed by short, low-intensity ‘breaks,’ before repeating the process again. This lets you give your muscle groups much more of a workout than you would’ve thought.
The trick here is to switch up which muscle groups you target. Doing several minutes focusing on each should be enough to help with your workout quite a bit. Even just 20 minutes of intervals could be more than enough to help with this.
4. Listen to Music

You’ll often need to get yourself pumped up and motivated at the start of your workout, and there are plenty of ways you can do this. One of the more effective ways is to listen to music. With the right songs, there’s no reason why they wouldn’t get you as pumped up as possible. And, they could keep you motivated throughout the workout.
That’s why most gyms and fitness centres always have music playing in the background. Their playlists are designed to help motivate everyone in the gym.
If you’re not the biggest fan of what’s playing in the gym, it’s just a matter of getting some headphones and creating the right playlist for you. Focus on songs that’ll motivate you to work out harder and harder. This shouldn’t take too long, and you can always switch up your playlist every once in a while.
5. Use Free Weights
Weight machines can be great when you’re first starting to work out, especially when it comes to learning the right form for your exercises. But, that doesn’t mean they’ll always be the best for your long-term. If you’re trying to put on more muscle, you could be much better off switching to free weights in time.
These lead to a greater hormonal response as you exercise, letting you lift heavier and for longer, while also maximising your overall results. While you shouldn’t push yourself too hard with this, it could be more than worth putting the effort into.
6. Switch to Dynamic Warmups
Warming up for your workouts is always essential, as it helps minimise the chances of a workout-related injury. Stretching is one of the more common ways to do this, but it’s far from your only option. You’ll have more than a few others, and some of these could be a lot more beneficial for your workouts.
Dynamic warmups can be one of the more notable of these. Studies have shown that these warmups help you see better results when you’re working out.
The trick here is to focus your warmups on the areas you’d like to see the most results in. If you’re focusing on your legs, for example, working leg extensions into your warmups can always be recommended. There’s no reason why this shouldn’t pay off quite a bit.
7. Get a Better Night’s Sleep
Improving your workout doesn’t just focus on what you should do in the gym. Quite the opposite. You’ll need to focus on more than a few other areas outside of this, too. One of the more notable of these is making sure you’re getting a quality night’s sleep, especially before and after your workout days.
This is when your body’s able to recover and rest properly. If you’re not getting enough of this every night, your body’s not going to feel nearly as well as it should. And, your workouts could end up suffering because of it. Make it a priority to get between seven and eight hours.
You’ll want to improve your workout routine for more than a few reasons. Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be as hard as you’d think. It could just be a matter of focusing on the right areas, and there’ll be nothing to worry about.
