5 Tips on How to Identify an Electrical Emergency
Electrical emergencies happen more often than you might realize. They can start simply, or become a big problem quickly, depending on the cause. To make sure that you’re prepared, you should know what to look for when checking for potential issues, including the risk of a serious situation that requires immediate professional attention.
Look for Obvious Sparks, Smoke, or Fire.

If you’re seeing sparks or flames, or even smoke, coming from an electrical appliance, outlet, or fixture, it could be an electrical issue. If there’s a fire, you’ll obviously want to call the emergency responders right away. Once they’ve taken care of the danger, you’ll need an emergency electrician, too.
Warm Spots.
Check around outlets and light switches for warm spots on the walls. If you feel heat around these outlets or switches, there may be an issue. Shut off your breaker and call an emergency electrician.
Do You Smell Burning Plastic or Other Unusual Smells?
Burning wires and electrical shorts often smell like burning or melted plastic. Some people have reported a slightly “fishy” smell coming from outlets that are shorting or when there is an electrical issue in the walls. If anything smells unusual and you can’t place it, call the pros.
Check Your Breaker Box for Buzzing.
If your breaker box is buzzing or humming, that’s a sure sign something is wrong. The box should be quiet during operation. Noise could be a sign of a short or a box that’s about to malfunction, so you’ll need to hire someone to come out right away and fix or replace it.
Are You Having Power Outages or Shortages?.
If there is no weather situation at play, a power outage or short is going to be a sign that something in the system is wrong. If it’s a light fixture, make sure that the bulb isn’t just going bad. If you still have shorts or outages, you should call an electrician right away.
When you know what to look for, it can be easier to avoid serious problems and know when to call an emergency electrician for assistance. Electrical work is dangerous and should always be left to the professionals.
