5 Things to Think About Before Travelling on Your Holiday This Year
AD
Planning a holiday is always exciting, but before you jet off to your dream destination, it’s important to make sure you’re fully prepared. No matter if you are a seasoned traveller or a once-in-a-blue-moon jet setter, there are a few key things to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.
So here are five things to think about before you travel this year:
Check Your Travel Documents

First things first: make sure all your travel documents are in order.
This might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people get caught out with expired passports or missing visas. Always double-check the validity of your passport well in advance as some places require 3 – 6 months left before expiry. As well as ensuring you have any necessary visas for your holiday destination.
It is also worth considering taking copies of important documents like your passport, driver’s licence, and travel insurance policy. Also having digital copies saved either on your phone or in an email can be a lifesaver if anything gets lost or stolen.
Plan for Health and Safety
In today’s world, health and safety has taken on a new level of importance when travelling. Before you head away, check if your destination requires any health certificates or vaccinations (you can find out more on the NHS website).
It’s also wise to pack a first aid kit with essentials like plasters, painkillers, and any prescription medications you may need (also put in a copy of your repeat prescription as evidence that you need to be carrying them, and in case you need some more). Also, find out the local emergency numbers for the country you’re visiting.
Make sure you also think about roaming on your mobile as well, especially since leaving the EU these are often not automatically included in phone plans.
Consider Your Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is one of those things that many people overlook, but it’s essential. Remember that it is not only medical emergencies you may want to cover but also trip cancellations, lost luggage, and flight delays or cancellations.
For instance, AirHelp can help you cover not only travel disruptions such as delayed or cancelled flights, but also can look to cover lost or delayed baggage. They even offer different plans depending on just how much you travel.
Prepare for Delays and Disruptions
Even the best-laid plans can go wrong especially when you’re travelling. No matter if it’s a delayed flight, a last-minute cancellation, or unexpected weather, it pays to be prepared.
As such it is worth packing some entertainment such as a book, or tablet with downloaded shows, in case of delays. Alongside a portable charger and some snacks and refreshments (however be aware of liquid restrictions).
While, making room in your luggage to pack in a raincoat, umbrella and jumper can be a good idea even if you think you’re headed away into 30-degree weather for the week. Especially for when you arrive back in the UK
Research Your Destination

Lastly, do some research on your destination to make sure you’re well-prepared for what lies ahead. Look into the local customs, climate, and currency to avoid any surprises. And have the address of your hotel or other accommodation (and their phone number) handy.
If you’re travelling to a country where English isn’t widely spoken, learning a few basic phrases in the local language can go a long way in enhancing your travel experience. Your smartphone can be very helpful in this respect. Even if it’s just how to order a coffee, ask for the bathroom, or help.
It’s also helpful to have an idea of transportation options, key attractions, and dining spots before you arrive. This way, you can hit the ground running and make the most of your holiday from the moment you arrive.
Final Thoughts: Make the Most of Your Holiday
A little preparation can go a long way in ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable holiday. By taking the time to organise your trip before you head to the airport you can make sure that even when the worst happens, you’re a step ahead!
What is your must-do tip before you head away on a holiday?

There’s a IATA website which will check your passort’s validity.
Ohh that is useful to know thank you!
Definitely agree organisation is key to a good holiday. I always try and plan for everything. A few years ago my daughter (7 at the time) fell ill in Spain on day 1 and ended up having an emergency appendectomy! So glad we had taken the time to research and get good quality travel insurance before we went.
Oh gosh that must have been so scary for you all! Good job you had some good insurance behind you!
I prepare for delays by wearing comfortable walking shoes so I can get my steps in exploring the terminals
Being comfortable is such a big thing isn’t it? I have to be comfortable when travelling.
I think…. Travels and life are wonderfull things to think about…
Some really good advice, travel insurance is always important, health care and travel back can be very expensive.
It really can be and you never know when the unexpected might happen.
Some great travel tips. I always carry a spare outfit and swimming costume in my hand luggage in case my suitcase goes missing.
That is a really good idea, I wouldn’t have thought of that!
Im forever checking my travel documents, it gives me anxiety haha. Great advice. Especially researching the destination, I need to do this more.
It’s awful isn’t it – I lost our return tickets from Paris years ago, the EuroStar was amazing but the train from London to home was awful couldn’t help us and had to rebuy. I try and be extra careful now.
really good advice, especially checking passports also if travelling to use check your ESTA, especially if you have renewed passport since last travelling to the states (ESTA last 2 years) if your renew your passport you need to renew the ESTA as the passport number on the ESTA will need to be changed
Ohh that’s a good one I hadn’t thought of thank you!
I agree, checking your passport is so important now!
It really is – I need to check mine to be honest as it feels like forever since I had one.
Great tips. My daughter and family recently had a bad experience when their flight was delayed for 8 hours which was particularly upsetting for my 7 year old great grandson. They did get compensation for the flights as my grandaughter is pretty savvy about how to go about this. My tip is be prepared for the unexpected !
Oh gosh – we had a really bad delay coming back from Flordia years and years ago I remember being put into a hotel for the night. It’s so hard to know what to expect isn’t it, you really do have to expect something is going to go “surprise”.
My tip is to try everything on before it goes in the case. Nothing worse than a holiday wardrobe that no longer fits well !
Yes! I am so bad at just throwing things in a case and thinking it will be fine.
