3 Steps to Taming the Chaos of Your Home
A home can be a fantastic and uplifting place — a place where we can retreat from the woes of the world and finally relax and breathe.
Unfortunately, a home can also just become an extension of the turmoil, chaos, and trouble we experience in the world more broadly.
What determines the difference between having a home that uplifts you, versus one that brings you down? Well, luxuries such as electric underfloor heating certainly won’t hurt, but it actually the degree to which you’re able to keep your home tidy and under control, to a large extent.
Here are some tips on how you can tame the chaos of your home and finally begin to relax again.
Tackle the clean-up operation one room at a time
Productivity gurus frequently talk about “chunking down” problems. The idea here is that whenever you’re faced with a serious issue, or project, that needs to be dealt with, you should break it down into the smallest possible sub-tasks and start there.
This is, on one hand, a practical way of making a start on an issue you might not otherwise know how to tackle, but it’s also a fantastic way of reducing the stress inherent in dealing with such issues. Instead of trying to digest the entire, terrible job in one go, you just focus on crossing off each small sub-task at a time.
This same approach can and should be used when executing a major home tidy-up and overhaul operation.
Focus on tidying up one room at a time, and don’t be afraid of moving some of the extra stuff to a different room while you’re busy. The key is that you should leave each room pristine once you’re done. Once you’ve handled the whole house like this, you can decide what to do with those remaining, stray belongings.
Get rid of as much stuff as you can
There’s a general minimalist axiom that you should keep only the things that make you happy, or are directly useful to you. Everything else should be scrapped.
While you may or may not choose to dive headfirst into the world of minimalism, taking steps to reduce the amount of clutter in your home is a brilliant way of simplifying the space and allowing for a bit more focus, clarity, and calm to enter the picture.
Many experts have commented that a chaotic and messy home environment leads to a chaotic and messy mind, as your perceptions are constantly jumbled by the sheer amount of stuff strewn about everywhere.
The less stuff you have, the less likely this is to be an issue.
Buy some extra storage boxes and shelves
No matter how much you’ve managed to pare down your belongings to those essential few items that make you happy or serve a direct purpose, and no matter how diligently you’ve gone through the home organising things, you are still likely to be faced with some logistical issues if you don’t have enough storage space.
Don’t be afraid to buy new storage crates, shelves, or bookcases as required. Even if you have a bit more furniture in the home, things will feel infinitely more in control if there’s a place for everything, and everything ends up in its place.

I feel like I live in the land of chaos. Between normal household stuff then add in the business I run out of our house – the walls are closing in. I just totally renovated my daughters room and literally just threw almost everything out. It was quite a freeing experience.
