3 Key Questions To Ask When Buying New Things For Your Home
We all like spending money on our home, but it isn’t always a smart thing to do. Look around you right now – can you identify some previous purchases that are collecting dust?
It’s easy to be tempted by deals and products, so we buy them for our home without thinking about it. In the end, we’ve wasted money on something that just didn’t need to be bought at all!
So, here are a few questions to ask yourself before buying any new stuff for your house.

Is it actually useful?
Will the new thing be used enough to warrant buying it? For instance, are you actually going to use a slow cooker all the time?
If it doesn’t get used at least a couple of times a week, it’s not worth spending money on.
What about that fancy armchair that cost a grand? It looks cool, but will people actually sit in it, or have you spent a grand on a large living room ornament?
You’ll soon realise that many purchases aren’t actually useful at all. Some will be, like luxury kitchens or bathroom upgrades.
That’s a genuine improvement to your home that gets used every single day and adds value to your house. Another example is a computer desk – it’s useful if you work from home as it stops you from working on the sofa or at the kitchen table.
How much does it cost & is it worth it?
This is two questions in one, but they need to go together. Ask yourself how much something costs, then consider if it is worth the price.
The armchair in the previous point is the perfect example of something that costs a lot of money but isn’t really worth it.
What are you getting from the purchase? A chair that’s moderately comfortable and looks cool…where’s the value?
By contrast, many home improvements are definitely worth the money. Think about spending money on a new front door – it may cost a lot, but it’s worth it as it makes your house look nicer and can upgrade your home security.
Looking at the price tag is important, but you need to put it into context by reviewing what you gain from the purchase.
What does your partner think?
Often, this is the best question to stop reckless spending! Ask your partner what they think of the product or purchase you’re considering.
If they ask what the hell you’re thinking, that’s a pretty good idea you shouldn’t buy it. Ideally, your partner should like the idea and can see why the purchase would be good for your home.
If you’re both on-board, there’s no reason you can’t buy it.
However, if they don’t approve or think it’s a waste of money, you should probably avoid buying it. After all, you both share the house and probably share your money.
It’s not a good idea to spend money on things for your home if you both don’t approve.
Ultimately, these questions will help you control your rash spending habits. Not only will you save money, but you’re also likely to save space in your home by not cluttering it up with useless junk!
