10 Ways To Improve Your Mental Health
If there is one thing that has been overlooked this year, it’s mental health. Of course, there is a good reason that the focus has been elsewhere: a pandemic is rather distracting and it does tend to interrupt people in their treatment for other things. Physical health has been considered in lockdowns, especially as governments have said that people are able to go for walks twice a day for fresh air and exercises. The thing is, it’s often forgotten that physical health is as important for mental health as anything else.
Mental well-being relates to your confidence, your thoughts, the way you feel and how you behave. It involves everything to do with your state of mind and emotional wellbeing, and your mental health needs to be as looked after as your physical health. You can purchase a high quality yoga mat and great running shoes, but if you’re not looking after your mental health you won’t feel motivated or mentally fit enough to get going with exercise. Your mental health needs to be as uplifted and supported as possible if you want to maintain healthy relationships and improve your self-esteem. With that in mind, we’ve got ten ways you can start improving your mental health and feel like you can conquer the world – no matter what.

Start With Your Body
We talked about getting a yoga mat and the right running shoes, but have you considered that taking care of your body goes beyond exercise? Indulge in good fruit and veggies, whole grains and nuts. You can feel fantastic when you eat well – though it’s important to note that food is not medicine and will not cure all ills. Your body deserves a good sleep every night, a balanced diet and a sweat to burn off your energy and calories. Let go of bad habits like smoking and excessive drinking, and you will do so much better for yourself when you choose your physical health first. It all impacts your mental wellbeing in the end, so think for you first and let the rest follow.
Love Thyself!
One of the hardest things to practice is self-love. It’s one of the hardest, and yet one of the worthiest things that you can ever practice for yourself. Eventually, you will feel happier and better in your skin, but self-love is not easy. It takes conscious effort to love yourself more and embrace your flaws, but it’s a decision that you make to accept yourself – warts and all. Acknowledge yourself and your feelings about how you look, how you move and how you approach others. You can only love yourself if you make the effort to do so, so make some time for self-care and put yourself first in your own world.
Remove Stress
It’s not going to be easy to remove stress: stress means different things to different people. If your workplace is stressing you out, you need to assess why. If your family is your source of stress, speaking to them about it is important for your future and your health. De-stressing after a long day is a must if you want to feel good and enhance your mood. You can improve your stress levels and your mood just by investing time in things that will make you happier.
Start Living For The Moment
It’s not as wild an idea as you think. If you want your mind to feel fantastic and get happy, then you need to start living for the moments you have, and not just for the moments you plan for in the future. Is it going to help you to dissect scenarios and information? No. Is it going to help you to worry about every single change that happens in your life? Absolutely not. Living in the present and saying “yes” to new things will give you a new optimism you’ll find refreshing. Eat slowly and mindfully, and feel the water when you go for a swim. Really think about every action you take and take time to enjoy them all. You need to live for now – there aren’t many moments we get!
Learn To Say “No”
While it’s important that you say yes to the new things that come your way, it’s so important that you say no to people on occasion. You should never confuse generosity with weakness, but you are entirely entitled to tell someone you are not happy or that you would not like to participate as you please. There is absolutely no need to worry about telling someone that you are not interested in what they are offering. It’s vital that you are happy first, before anything else. Say no and put your needs and wants first.

Remain Positive
When it comes to thinking about your mental health, a positive mindset is a must! You need to have a positive attitude at all times and you will be ready to take on any challenge as a result. Positive thinkers are far more brave and confident than others, and they are far more likely to enjoy life as they see it. They can still overthink of course, but that doesn’t mean that they are thinking so hard that they ruin life for themselves. You need to remember that a positive mental attitude will greatly improve your mental health and your ability to remain positive will reflect in your behaviour and movement in daily life.
Be Brave & Reach Out
It can be really difficult to reach out and speak to people, especially when you don’t know those people. Social media and online interactions are easy: you are behind a screen and you are faceless. Your confidence online is going to be very different from your confidence in person, and strong connections to other people are going to increase your happiness and your ability to have a longer life. Bravery comes when you are face to face with new people and aren’t a fan of conversation in person. Be yourself and be genuine and you will attract people to you who value who you are. This can instantly uplift you and make you feel secure and included – which boosts your mental health as a result.
Have A Purpose
Those moments when the world feels very dark and bleak are not always easy to contend with. You can’t always feel on top of the world or ready for anything, but if you have a purpose you’re going to feel satisfied with life: needed. Everyone needs to feel like they have a goal in life, and if you don’t have one, you’re going to feel empty and lost. You don’t need to feel like that: especially not when there are things that you could be doing to feel good about the way that you love. If you have purpose, you gain fulfillment. If you have a goal, you can consistently better yourself and improve every single day. It’s not always easy, of course, but it’s a way to live a life that allows you to have secure mental health.
Get Offline
Being on social media can be a cancer for your mental health. The constant judgement and gossip and comparison can really affect your mental health. You need to do what you want to feel good, and the best way to do it is to get off social media and try to live a life that is more peaceful away from a screen. There is nothing wrong with being on social media but if it’s starting to make you doubt who you are and what you are doing with life, you’re in trouble. Turn off your phone if things get too much and don’t be afraid to get offline with your apps deleted. You do not NEED social media to function as a human being, and you are in total control of the content that you consume. It’s the most important thing that you can remember here when it comes to your mental health: you are in control! Mental health is directly linked to your social media use, so when you feel like it’s getting too much, take a step back and a breath – you need it.
Stop Glorifying Burnout
It is so easy to feel proud that you are on top of it all, but are you really on top of it all if you’re not sleeping or eating well and you have no time for exercise? Perhaps not. Think about the way that you work and live outside of work and make sure that you are maintaining a healthy balance. There is nothing to feel proud of if you are run down and not feeling well. Burning out is not okay, it means you are taking on too much excess and not doing enough for yourself. Instead of glorifying it, start working backwards. Take on a little less work, follow better routines and go to sleep at a reasonable hour. You’re going to feel much better mentally for it when you do.
