The Power of the TV: Why It’s a Perfect Way to Relax and Unwind
This post is a collaboration with TV Licensing (a trademark of the BBC), but all thoughts and experiences are my own.
Let’s be honest, for many of us, there’s nothing quite like sinking into your favourite spot on the sofa, turning on the TV, and letting the stresses of the day melt away. Especially at this time of year, after all, Television truly shines during the festive season, with Christmas Day films on TV becoming a beloved tradition for families to gather and enjoy together.
These days TV is a huge part of our lives from an early age as we talk about our favourite shows on the playground, then as we grow, swapping to group chats and watch-a-thons.
Of course, it isn’t just the social aspect that has many of us tuned in, it also offers an escape, an opportunity to dive into gripping dramas, laugh-out-loud comedies, or thought-provoking documentaries and all from the comfort of your home. As part of the BBC TV Licensing Rest & Connect Campaign, I would love to share with you some of my TV moments.
Why TV Allows You to Rest & Connect

- Escapism: No matter if you want to explore a different galaxy, delve into the past or just spend some time laughing at your favourite comedy, TV helps you step out of your reality and into another world.
- Shared experiences: Watching TV with family or friends can lead to bonding moments. It even offers chances to talk about the latest episode with colleagues or even the person next to you on the bus.
- Ease of access: With the choice of live TV and on-demand services like BBC iPlayer and more you can watch what you want, when you want.
- Mood booster: A good comedy can make you laugh, while a gripping drama keeps your mind occupied from daily worries.
TV and Me
As someone who has chronic health issues TV plays perhaps a larger than normal role in my life. There are, after all, many days when all I can do is curl up on the sofa and watch something easy. This brings a laugh or smile to a day when I cannot do much more.
However, it doesn’t just give me something to watch on bad days, it also gives me a way to connect with friends and family. While I might not be able to do so much anymore, I can anymore, I can talk about the TV I have watched the previous night.
Some of my favourite shows to watch and share include:
I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!
Who doesn’t like seeing celebrities doing trials? It has to be one of the best shows to talk about with friends. Plus, with the new series just starting, it’s the perfect entertainment for the cold evenings on the way up to Christmas. Who do you want to win? Who do you want to do the next Bushtucker Trial and just what do you think of everything going down in camp?
Doctor Who
I have a list of shows that must be watched live and not on catch up and Doctor Who sits right at the top thanks to the number of spoilers that hit social media as it airs. However, I will admit I am often found messaging Bex from Futures during episodes asking if she’s watching too.
Taskmaster
From its start on Dave to its current runs on Channel 4 Taskmaster is one of those shows I’ve watched multiple times and every episode. It is definitely one of my bad day shows as I know it will give me a laugh. What will the next task be, how will the celebrities tackle it, and what dry joke will come up next?!
The Cleaner
From one Greg Davies show to another this is one program I have been late to. With 3 seasons already in the bag and a star-studded cast, it made it the perfect show to binge-watch on iPlayer with Ash while we’ve both felt unwell over the past few weeks. Especially thanks to its mix of wit, mystery and comedy making it such fun to watch.
In Conclusion

Television has earnt its place as a favourite way to unwind. It’s more than just entertainment; it’s a gateway to stories and cultures. It can soothe the soul or spark your imagination.
So, the next time you’re feeling like you need to relax, grab your TV remote, pop on your favourite show, and let the magic of television do the rest. After all, a little screen time can do wonders for the mind.

Like you, I watch a fair amount of TV. Again like you, Taskmaster is always good entertainment.
It is great isn’t it – I love a good Taskmaster episode!
I enjoy a good documentary and action films, they really help me unwind and shut off
There’s nothing like a good documentry at times, what are your favourites to watch?
Love watching my favourite TV shows to unwind.
What are your favourite shows to watch and unwind with?
I love true crime best but also watch some of the soaps
I have to admit I do love a true crime story, I used to love reading about them too.
What’s your favourite old crime series to watch?
During the winter, we are really glad of the TV. There’s nothing better, on a cold night, than flicking through the channels and choosing our viewing.
Do you have a favourite programme you like to curl up and watch over the colder months?
I love curling up on the sofa and watching old episodes of Frieinds
I think sometimes it can be quite theraputic to just relax and rewatch old favourites.
I find a television switched on when I’m home to be hugely relaxing and entertaining. I can watch films, documentaries, soaps, dramas and use it as a radio, too. It simply isn’t the same watching on a laptop or phone.
I agree with you – I have to admit I think ours is always on!
I think it can be comforting to rewatch things as well.
I mainly watch the football, and highlight shows like Match of the Day
I think there are probably a lot of people who choose those types of shows.
my fave TV programmes generally fall into 2 categories. Tense drama ( recently been enjoying The day of the Jackal and Until I kill you) and reality talent shows such as Sewing bee and Portrait artist.
I agree tv is a major part of my life too. We all have different tastes when it comes to programmes. I don’t watch any of the ones you mention. I like dramas and quiz shows. I also like Emmerdale, my secret pleasure is Call the Midwife, can’t wait for the Christmas special.
Love the Walking Dead and all it’s spin offs.
I absolutely love coming home and when all the dinner is done and cleared up and everyone showered and ready for bed, putting the TV on and not speaking and just letting my brain rest. There is nothing better is there.
It’s just such an easy and simple way to wind down isn’t it? And just try and forget about the day.
