Patio Doors: French, Bifold or Sliding?

With summertime approaching, it is the ideal time to think about upgrading your patio doors. Modern design technology, high security, improved light levels and thermal efficiency? Check.   A spectacular appearance that displays your garden at its very best, whilst adding value to your home resale valuation? Check. The only decision you need to make is which type of patio door is right for your property; French, bifold or sliding? Let us explain the merits of each one, to help you make that all-important decision.

French doors

A common sight on many houses, the French variant consists of a left and right-hand pair of doors; these are hinged and, in most cases, open outwards. Additionally, if the immediate garden area is congested, opening of the door may be difficult. Whilst French doors allow for open access to the rear of a property, they are restricted by the width of their frame. Standard French door widths are 900mm; therefore, if your space is wider than 1800mm, this option is unsuitable and you will need to consult a patio doors supplier for further advice. French doors offer an economical answer to rear access, with the financial outlay needed less than that for sliding patio doors, or bifold doors.

Bifold doors

The sassy new kid on the patio door block. Aluminium bifold doors open fully, using a sliding concertina action and fold flat when closed. A bifold door is ideal for large areas of glazing and offers an unobstructed view of your garden.The multi-pane structure affords more security points to be added, in comparison to French or sliding doors. Child-friendly features are included, should your little person trap their fingers between the panes. Money well spent for that alone; however, bifolds return the favour in terms of property resale valuation, adding more to the purchase price than either French or sliding doors.

Sliding doors

These are what most people call ‘patio doors’ on account of the traditional popularity of single-pane sliding doors. However, modern sliding doors are multi-pane and offer a larger, uninterrupted glazed area than a French door. As a consequence, this extra width capacity means the sliding door lets in more natural sunlight, along with offering better vision than its hinged counterpart. A sliding door is perfect where storage space is limited; when opened, they take up less space than bifold doors. Sliding patio doors also create an illusion of space, blurring the boundary between home and garden. A case of letting the outside in!

Verdict

Whilst the dazzling attributes of bifold patio doors ensure their popularity, sliding doors and French doors have their merits and can also enhance the appearance of your home.
