The classic family vacation stereotype is the family road trip, it can be fun visiting attractions along the way, staying in hotels and being together can in some ways be fun but as anyone who’s experienced the reality of this, it’s not always that fun all of the time.

But with a little bit of planning, it’s perfectly possible to have a really nice and enjoyable time on any road trip.

Get Distractions For The Kids Arranged In Advance

This is a key and a must for planning a long road trip, there are methods of entertaining the kids that I would not even remotely entertain under normal circumstances but in the face of several hours in a cramped car situation, I would say are perfect.

Allowing them to have screen time to watch films and cartoons is a great way of keeping them entertained and more importantly from fighting each other.

Make Sure You Have The Vehicle In Good Order Before Leaving

When preparing for a long trip in the car it’s essential to check the good working order of your vehicle to avoid any mechanical or other issues that can leave you stranded at the side of the road.

Have a professional check your car for safety before you go and this can flag up any issues and have them sorted before you go and gives the best chance of an issue free trip.

Ensure You Have A Large Enough Vehicle

It’s important to make sure you have enough room when going away if it involves long stretches of time in the vehicle.

If your car is a bit tight for space it could make it a hot, angry sweaty, argument filled experience, so think about if this is really going to work or not.

You might want to consider hiring a larger vehicle for the duration of the journey, maybe even think about the idea to take an RV road trip which not only solves the trip there and back issues but sorts out your accommodation as well.

Have The Stops Planned Out Before You Go

It’s important to have a great plan well before you go as this will make things so much easier on you all when travelling.

It can negate the chances of arguments because if the itinerary is set before we head off then there won’t be the inevitable, I want to go here but she wants to go there type of arguments.

Consider Overnight Stops & Break It Up

If the trip is an especially long one then it’s a really good idea to break it up with overnight stops as these can be a real part of the vacation experience and gives you more time to appreciate many more attractions than if the whole time you are in one town, city or area.
